Tight-knit community along the coast
Ocean Park is an older, well-established beachfront community of Virginia Beach with an incredible history. In the early 1900s, it was once a stop on a 24-mile trolley from Norfolk. It also was the home of the thriving Ocean Park Casino until it burned down in 1929. Today, Ocean Park is known as “a very tight-knit neighborhood," says Steve Hadder, a Realtor with RE/MAX Alliance, who’s been selling homes nearby for over seven years. "Everybody knows everybody, and it’s like a city within itself, with everything you need just minutes away."
Beach cottages, contemporary homes and condos
With street names like Ocean Tide Drive and Whispering Sand Lane, the water is always calling in Ocean Park. This beachside community is just minutes from the Chesapeake Bay. A drive through the neighborhood presents charming beach cottages with a mix of contemporary homes. The area also features a few historic properties dating to the early 1900s. Three-story beach houses, condos and two-unit duplexes are typical, most with garages resting on small lots. Many residences emphasize outdoor living featuring large porches and balconies. “The market is great in Ocean Park,” Hadder says. Homes here typically sell for between $500,000 to $800,000.

Get lost in nature at Pleasure House Point Natural Area
Among 118 acres of tidal marsh and maritime forests is the hidden oasis of the Pleasure House Point Natural Area. Perfect for nature lovers, visitors can go hiking through sandy trails that meander between live oaks and observe the Carolina chickadee resting on branches. To preserve the natural areas, no motor vehicles or bikes are allowed, but the Lynnhaven River provides gentle waters for kayaking or canoes. This park offers breathtaking views of native wildlife and plant life just a short walk away. The kids will love hanging out at Loch Haven Park and playing in the playground. Visit the Bayville Golf Club and play a game of golf along the plush fairways of the 401-yard, par-4 eighth-hole course. Founded in 1995, this is a member-only club with a state-of-the-art practice facility and fine dining restaurant, Bayville Tavern -- a hub for social events. End the evening with a walk along the beach at sunset, “It’s just beautiful," Hadder says. "It’s something you have to come to see yourself."
Grocery Stores and local restaurants on Shore Drive
Along Shore Drive, there's a Kroger and an abundance of breweries, beachside shops and local eateries from seafood to Southern fare. Start the morning at American Brew, a locally owned coffee shop where residents can pick up a steamy latte and their signature "brewrrito" for breakfast. For lunch, head to Froggie’s for good ol’ Southern staples featuring fried frog legs and the house-smoked brisket "sammich". Just across Lesner Bridge are waterside restaurants where residents can pull up their boats. The Shellfish Company is known for its year-round fresh catches that include flounder, tuna and salmon.

Community events that bring the neighborhood together
The Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad was founded in 1942 and is a pillar in the community providing 24-hour emergency service and pre-hospital care for residents. Meet neighbors at a monthly meeting hosted by The Ocean Park Civic League, founded in 1944. The organization is committed to preserving the neighborhood’s history and improving the quality of life for residents. Not only do they provide a yearly scholarship for students, but they host several annual events. Don't miss out on the yearly Firework Show, Spring Fling or Fall Festival featuring local food and live music.
Close to Highway 60 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
Due to Ocean Park’s suburban streetscape, the area is car-dependent. Shore Drive runs through the neighborhood and can get you to the rest of Virginia Beach’s amenities. There are also several bus stops with daily service along Shore Drive. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which connects Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore, is just two miles west.
