From an equestrian enclave to Miami suburb
Formerly part of Miami Springs, Virginia Gardens was created in 1947 when an ordinance outlawing horses in town prompted a group of citizens to break away and form their community. The residents in this group were transplants from Virginia, a state known for its love of equestrian pursuits. Since then, Virginia Gardens has grown from a collection of farms, barns and horse stables just north of Miami International Airport into a modern Miami suburb that’s retained its charm as commerce areas have popped up since the airport’s arrival. “What’s unique about this community is that it feels like a small town – everyone knows each other,” says Giselle Munoz Perez, a resident and broker associate with Century 21 Edge.

Affordable Spanish-influenced ranch-style homes
A walk along one of Virginia Gardens’ modest sidewalks showcases grid-like residential streets filled with landscaping found in medians and around the edges of front yards – each of which is kept neat. Ranch-style homes built in the mid to late 20th century sit atop the square-shaped lots. Most are seen with orange clay-tile roofs and stucco exteriors synonymous with Spanish styles, while a handful have a typical ranch-style appearance. “There are no gated communities here or homeowners associations, which means we’re more affordable than some of the surrounding neighborhoods, explains Munoz Perez.” These prices range from $500,000 to $850,000 depending on size and condition, while newer, larger homes can reach just over $1 million.

Local spots along Northwest 36th Street
Northwest 36th Street borders the community to the south, where many local eateries reside. Authentic Dominican fare, such as plantains, shrimp and palomilla steak, can be enjoyed at Yuka Deli, while Thai and Japanese cuisine for dinner sits just a few blocks east at Suvi. A short trip north is Westland Mall, where popular retailers like Macy’s and New York & Company can be explored. Virginia Gardens' annual traditions
Village of Virginia Gardens hosts several events throughout the year to unite neighbors, including its Annual Family Bike Scavenger Hunt, where participants can learn about the community's history while competing in teams to cross the finish line first. It offers the Anchor Service Club, which focuses on uplifting the community through donations of money, time and volunteer efforts. In 2010, the club was recognized as the “Outstanding International Club of the Year.”

As mentioned, Virginia Gardens is bordered by Miami International Airport to the south, making overhead flights a common occurrence. Directly to the west sits the tracks of the Hileah Rail Yard, where freight trains periodically pass through. Though considered background noise for many, those sensitive to sound may want to consider this before moving into the community.
