In the foothills of north Georgia, Waleska has become a rural college town home to Reinhardt University, located about 45 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta. Originally incorporated in 1899, it was settled years earlier and is named for Warluskee, the daughter of an Indian Chief who was moved west. The area has seen multiple industries, including mills, lumbering, and tobacco manufacturing, but has always been best known for Reinhardt University, which opened its doors in 1883. “It is a slower pace of life,” says Sandra Watkins, a Realtor with Re/Max Town and Country and Cherokee County resident. “You see a lot of farms out this way, and you can buy a house on a larger tract of land. I would say the biggest draws are the university and the Arrowhead Lake subdivision.”

Homes on acres of land or a master-planned community
Potential buyers can find a range of architectural styles from ranch properties, Colonial Revivals and new construction farmhouses in small subdivisions or plotted on acres of land. There is the chance to purchase vacant land, where developers and buyers can start their property from scratch. A big draw to the area is Lake Arrowood, a gated master-planned community with 3,500 planned properties surrounding the lake by the same name. The community has been around since the 1970s and offers many resident-only amenities. Prices throughout the city range from $300,000 to lavish lakefront houses that have risen to over $1 million. “The market is moving slowly currently. Not only are properties sitting longer than we are used, but the inventory is still low across Cherokee County,” Watkins says.
