Pleasant days and starry nights await you in Walker, Louisiana. It’s one of only two cities in Livingston Parish and was founded in the 1820s. Originally called Milton Old Field, the town’s name was changed to Walker in 1890. Located in the pine woods near the twisting Amite River and some 20 miles east of Baton Rouge, Walker has a small urban core. But it stretches far beyond that to embrace open, rural land. There’s so little light pollution on the outskirts of town that a national observatory makes its home there, as it scans the skies, catching glimpses of what lies beyond the Milky Way.

Living in Walker provides residents with the best of country and city lifestyles. There’s plenty of open space to build your own dream home, and lots range from a few thousand dollars to several hundreds of thousands depending on how much land you’d like. Along with custom-built residences, you’ll find both traditional and a surprising amount of more contemporary housing. There are also manufactured homes, cottages, Acadians, farmhouses and ranch-style dwellings throughout the area. Prices range from $185,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bath ranch-style residence to $700,000 for a five-bedroom, four-bath traditionally designed newly built construction.

Students in the area have their choice of schools in Walker itself or throughout the parish as a whole. Walker Elementary educates children while empowering them. The school is growing quickly with new classes being added for prekindergarten, second, third and fifth grades. Walker Junior High participates in the State Library of Louisiana’s Young Reader’s Choice Awards and helps make the journey to high school easier. Walker High was founded in 1921 and focuses on career and college preparation while remaining one of the top 35 best schools in the state for athletes according to Niche. It also has a visual arts department teaching ceramics, game animation and art history courses.

In the more urban part of Walker, those craving the outdoors can venture to Sidney Hutchinson Park. The green space is centrally located and surrounded by a 1.2-mile walking trail that takes you around the perimeter of the park. The path is dog-friendly and has a few spots where your furry companion can run off-leash. The space also has a large lagoon stocked with fish like rainbow trout. You can cast your line from the footbridge spanning the waterway while watching ducks and geese enjoy themselves in and around the pond. In addition, the park has baseball diamonds for summertime games and Challenger Field for players with disabilities.

One of the most unique features of the Walker area is the LIGO Livingston Observatory. One of four sites working in conjunction to detect gravitational waves in space, the station’s sister site is located over 3,000 kilometers away in Hanford, Washington. Gravitational waves can signal the birth or death of a star as well as when stars collide. The public can learn more about what these waves mean on the first Saturday of every month when the observatory opens to the community by appointment. There are over 50 interactive exhibits in the Science Education Center for young and old to explore in this remote area of Livingston Parish.

Walker welcomes residents home each day with a laid-back attitude, everyday essentials and star-filled skies.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
