A quiet hillside community in Walnut Creek
Mere minutes from the active suburban shopping centers of Walnut Creek, the Palos Verde Area is home to private hillside streets shaded by the canopies of mature trees. “Walnut Creek is the crown jewel of Contra Costa County,” says Margie Morris, a local real estate agent with Christie’s International Real Estate Sereno. “You have an everyday backdrop of the gorgeous Mt. Diablo, and a close-knit community that takes pride in their neighborhood.” The community has a quiet atmosphere close to the restaurants and shops of the Palos Verdes Mall, with the hiking trails of Briones Regional Park and Acalanes Ridge a short drive away.
Million-dollar homes with beautifully maintained yards
Ranch-style homes make up the housing scene in the Palos Verdes Area, and it's rare to find homes on the market for less than $1 million. Houses sit close together on quarter-to-half-acre lots, with tall trees and fenced-in back lots providing privacy between neighbors, and most have attached two-car garages. “There’s a lot of pride of ownership in the Palos Verdes Area,” says Morris. “And most houses have well-maintained front lawns.” The area’s more established homes date back to the 1950s and 1960s, while a select number were built after 1990. Prices range from $1 million to $2.3 million, with costs increasing with square footage and recent renovations.
Extracurricular offerings and dual enrollment courses at nearby public schools
Highly rated public schools serve the community, starting with Pleasant Hill Elementary School, which earns a B-plus overall grade from Niche. Also with a B-plus, Pleasant Hill Middle School has a variety of after-school extracurricular offerings, including clubs centered around anime, pickleball and Dungeons & Dragons. College Park High School receives an A-minus and has a diverse selection of visual and performing arts programs and career and technical education courses, from stagecraft and graphic design to three-dimensional art design and vocal music. High schoolers can also earn dual credit by taking concurrent enrollment courses with Diablo Valley College.
Convenient shopping centers and easy access to Main Street
The Palos Verdes Mall shopping center is in the neighborhood’s north end and is home to a handful of local restaurants, a pharmacy and a grocery store. Mona’s Burgers and Shakes has been serving the Walnut Creek area for over a decade with classic pub bites, specialty burgers and hand-crafted milkshakes. Taqueria La Plaza serves breakfast burritos, seafood and tacos ranging from carne asada to shredded chicken. Lunardi’s Market is the nearest option for groceries. “There are numerous fantastic farmers markets throughout the area,” says Morris. The Diablo Valley Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning and, with dozens of vendors and locally grown produce. “The market is one of the best in the area,” says Morris. “A lot of the produce comes from the greater Bay Area, and live music and food trucks usually accompany the farm stands.” For a larger selection, shoppers can take the 2-mile drive east to Main Street, Walnut Creek’s primary shopping hub, for dozens of local businesses, supermarkets and big-box stores. Broadway Plaza is a short drive southeast and is home to over 80 shops and restaurants.
Nearby swimming pools and hillside hiking
Larkey Park lies just east of the Palos Verdes Area and has a playground, picnic tables and open field space. The Larkey Park Swim Center offers swimming lessons and recreational pool access for pass holders. The Briones to Mt. Diablo Regional Trail passes through the park and spans roughly 12 miles through Walnut Creek from Briones Regional Park and Mount Diablo State Park. The 6,000-acre Briones Regional Park has trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, along with group campsites, picnic areas and an archery range.
Accessible thoroughfares for Oakland and San Francisco commuters
Interstate 680 is around 2 miles from the community and spans around 20 miles northwest to Vallejo and roughly 40 miles south to Fremont. “Walnut Creek is a great area for commuters,” Morris says. “You can get to San Francisco withing 45 minutes, and Oakland is even closer.” California state Route 24 can take drivers about 25 miles southwest to Downtown San Francisco.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
