A welcoming town for families in northern Kentucky
Among the picturesque landscape of northern Kentucky sits Walton, a quaint town with a charming shopping district, captivating views and a close community. “The cool thing about Walton is it’s near the bottom of Boone County, where you start to see the beautiful terrain of Kentucky and the rolling hills and picturesque views,” says Kathy Hurst, Tourism Information Coordinator for Northern Kentucky Convention & Visitors Bureau. The suburb is rated the No. 6 best place to raise a family in Boone County by Niche and is known for its highly rated schools, beloved historic Main Street and beautiful farmland. It’s a super underrated part of Kentucky because while you have that peaceful seclusion, it’s convenient to get to locally owned shops and larger amenities,” Hurst says.
Breakfast and baked goods on Main Street
Along South Main Street on Route 25, residents will find a quaint, charming row of shops and eateries. “Main Street is where all the locally owned businesses are,” Hurst says. At Family’s Main Street Café, enjoy home-style breakfast sandwiches and comfort food like country fried steak and open-face roast beef sandwiches. Then head to Bailey Jaynes Bakery & Café for a chocolate éclair, donut or fresh coffee. Dollar General, KellyQ’s & Whippers Dairy, the Boone County Public Library and the post office are also here. For more shopping, head to Walton Towne Center off I-75, which offers Kroger, Kohl’s, a pet store, a hair salon and an authentic Mexican restaurant, El Toro Bravo of Walton.

Santa leads the Christmas parade
This tight-knit neighborhood goes all out to show its community pride. Walton hosts an annual turkey trot, a highly popular Old Fashion Day in the fall, which has an annual theme, 5K Race, picnic and parade. The largest and most beloved, Christmas on Main, is a magical sight, coming alive with lights, a parade led by Santa and a petting zoo. “People can get hot apple pie cider and make a drink at the hot chocolate bar, and we give out candy,” Hurst adds. Waltz into a charmed life in Walton.

Walton invokes the country lifestyle at every turn, offering single-family, ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, cottages, stunning brick colonials and sprawling farmhouses ranging from $175,000 to $800,000. Most homes were built in the early 2000s, but residents can also find houses built from 2020 to 2022 in the Wildcat Run and Aosta Valley subdivisions. At Walton Community Park, kick the soccer ball around, shoot hoops, hike the trails or hit the softball field, dedicated to All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League pitcher Pat Scott. Furry friends can also play in the space’s dog park, which includes an obstacle course. Subdivisions Aosta Valley, Wildcat Run and High Street also boast their own pocket parks for residents to enjoy. Along historic Main Street is Citizens Park, a charming green space surrounded by historic buildings, which hosts events throughout the year, from movies to holiday celebrations. “There’s also Oak Creek RV Resort and Campground here, that’s a popular weekend spot,” says Hurst.

Twenty miles to Cincinnati
While the neighborhood is extremely walkable, Walton’s proximity to major highways makes it easy to get around. “It’s a small area, but it sits directly on the I-71/75 Interchange, so you’ve got everything you need at your fingertips,” she says. By hopping on Interstate 75, residents can access Cincinnati in 20 miles and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, one of Walton’s largest employers, in 17. St. Elizabeth Florence Hospital is a 10-mile drive up Route 25, and the neighborhood is within 20 miles of two universities.
