Verona’s countryside holds small businesses and well-rated schools
Fair Verona — it may not be Italy, but the sweeping pastoral landscapes of Kentucky lay the scene. With a population of approximately 1,236, Verona offers a rural getaway from bustling city life. Besides acreage, the small town gives residents a well-rated school district and a few local businesses in the countryside.
Rural roads offer farmhouses and space between neighbors
South of Cincinnati, lush Verona is composed of a few roads alongside farmlands, barns and open fields. Both businesses and single-family houses line the streets, most with plenty of land for space from neighbors. “The people who move there like the peace and quiet of living in the country,” says Melissa Jakubowski with eXp Realty and over 15 years of experience in the area. The large yards often have garden beds decorated with bushes, and sometimes mature trees shade the homes. Prospective buyers can choose from styles like Cape Cods featuring front porches, ranch-style homes with bay windows, American Foursquares and farmhouses. Sales prices range from $155,000 for a ranch-style house to $386,000 for an American Foursquare.
Walton-Verona schools offer strong academics and unique clubs
Students in Verona go to Walton Verona Independent Schools, a district that earns an A-minus rating on Niche. “Verona and Walton have good schools, making the areas appealing for families looking to settle down,” Jakubowski says. Schools include Walton-Verona Elementary School, Walton-Verona Middle School and Walton-Verona High School. The elementary school has an A-minus grade, the middle school has a B-plus and the high school earns a B according to Niche. The high school has unique clubs from juggling to animated films.
Local recreation includes Bearcats games and woodland trails
The Walton-Verona Athletic Complex has a turf football and soccer field, plus a track around it open to the public during the day. The tennis courts are also for public use. The complex shares a cross-country course and trails through the woodlands with the Waller Stephenson Mill Park. At Verona Baseball Field, fans can watch the Walton-Verona Bearcats win baseball games from the bleachers.
Wine, fish and farm supplies sold in Verona’s business district
Verona has a small business district of local retail and restaurants. To get groceries and convenience store items, residents head to Verona Market, which also has a deli counter for takeout sandwiches. Farmers can go to Air View Farm Supply for agricultural items. As for eateries, Verona Angilo's is best known for the house-breaded fish and chips dinners, plus outdoor seating in a gazebo filled with picnic tables. At Schoolyard Winery, patrons can order glasses paired with cheese boards in a remodeled high school building or sit outside by the vineyard and listen to live music. Day-trippers can visit the Cincinnati Art Museum or Findlay Market.
Interstate 71 takes commuters straight into Cinncinati
About 27 miles from downtown Cincinnati, residents of Verona can easily commute to the big city via Interstate 71 North.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
