Child Street West offers peaceful living along the Kickemuit River
In the grand scheme of things, Child Street West is one of those neighborhoods that has a strategic location. It’s just south of downtown Warren, making it more residential than commercial – yet still with quick access to destinations that help you fulfill daily errands. It also faces the Kickemuit River on the east end, putting residents in contact with opportunities to enjoy natural spaces. But, as Realtor Elizabeth Kirk puts it, access to culture is another feature of this modest suburb. “Residents here in their free time are going to look for places where they can lounge and have a view, or stroll around and people watch, which is something Water Street in Warren can offer,” Kirk says. “The Blount Clam Shack is a popular go-to spot.” Tucked in between water and culture, Child Street West offers a quiet lifestyle without being too remote.
Child Street West has diverse homes, from cottages to modern builds
On the home front, Child Street West has a unique layout: it is neatly striped with streets running north-south, with naturalistic names like Oak Street and Bay Street. Housing stock here will be relatively modern, from the 70s and 80s. For example, you might find a contemporary Colonial situated on a quarter acre lot. Inside, these will have open concept layouts that are ideal for entertaining or grabbing waterfront views. Prices start in the upper $400,000s.
But if your search includes homes in the mid $600,000s, you can find a quintessential beach cottage, which despite the modest-sounding name, is really a multi-story home with classic wood shingle siding. Properties such as these can have comparatively large lots —such as a half-acre or more— and contain features like renovated interiors and docks leading to the waterfront.
Bristol Warren Regional School District serves the neighborhood
The trail also connects to some of the well-regarded schools that serve Child Street West – namely, Hugh Cole Elementary and Kickemuit Middle. Hugh Cole enrolls over 500 students in grades PK-5, but still maintains a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Niche gave the school an overall grade of B. This is a Feinstein Learning School, a Rhode Island initiative to encourage community service. Indeed, local parents note that the school is often running a community charity event. Kickemuit Middle is slightly larger, with nearly 700 students enrolled in grades 6-8. It has a similar student-teacher ratio as Hugh Cole, and also had Niche give it an overall grade of B. In 2023, students from the school won the Rhode Island Science Olympiad State Championship. Kickemuit Middle is slightly larger, with nearly 700 students enrolled in grades 6-8. Parks, trails and bike paths offer outdoor recreation near the area
The namesake Child Street runs east-west along the top of the neighborhood. Use this route to conveniently access the trailhead of the Warren Bike Path, a 1-mile stretch that follows the former Warren-Fall River Railroad. While biking is in the name, many residents prefer to walk the trail. In the future, you may not even have to drive there: a proposed future section will create a bridge over the river. The trail takes you to Warren Recreation Park, where you can lounge under a pavilion, play with your dog or climb on the playground. Facilities for basketball, baseball and volleyball are available.
