The fishing industry is strong in New Astoria
New Astoria is across the bridge from the original city, between the historic Fort Stevens and the Columbia River. Immediately to the west of the neighborhood, boats can dock at the Hammond Boat Basin. “That is one big draw,” says Craig Weston, a broker with Windermere Realty Trust. “A lot of people are fishermen—full-time fishermen, sports fishermen—that is their industry.” Besides an active fishing community and some of the freshest seafood in the state, there are miles of waterfront trails, acres of green space and other outdoor recreation by the water.
The Hammond Boat Basin has served as filming location for Hollywood films.

Fort Stevens State Park and Coffenbury Lake
The Eben H. Carruthers Memorial Park is just east of the neighborhood. It offers views of the Columbia River and the occasional elk, otter or wading bird. Pet owners can let their dogs run leash-free at the adjacent dog park or walk them along the paved Warrenton Waterfront Trail. Hikers admire the iconic Astoria-Megler Bridge or catch glimpses of herons, elk, sea lions, river otters and eagles along the 4.7-mile trail.
Around a mile and a half away from the neighborhood, Fort Stevens State Park is home to several attractions and 15 miles of multi-use trails along 4,300 acres of nature. Coffenbury Lake is popular for swimming, boating and fishing. “It is stocked with rainbow trout and, every so often, steelhead,” says Park Ranger Assistant Adrianna Knickerson. “We also have a couple of kayak and paddleboard rentals.” The site also includes the historic Peter Iredale shipwreck of 1906 on the beachfront, a Civil War-era fort and an underground World War II command center.

Condos and duplexes on the Columbia River
Coastal cottages and bungalows in varying shades of blue vinyl—many built around the turn of the 20th century—line the streets of New Astoria. These homes cost around $315,000 to $320,000, while duplexes and condos can range between $450,000 and $550,000. Those near the Hammond Boat Basin with views of the Columbia River tend to sell on the upper end of the spectrum and some provide rental opportunities. “There are a few people who get the opportunity to live on one side and rent the other to pay for what they bought,” Weston says.
