Warrington Township wants to preserve its agricultural atmosphere
Just a few minutes from Harrisburg and York in southeast Pennsylvania, Warrington Township is dedicated to maintaining its rural atmosphere and green spaces. With all the farms and forests, many residents put their land into an Agricultural Security Area, which prevents the land from being bought or divided. “We’re big on our ag security to keep the agricultural culture going instead of building up the township,” says Stacy Wiseman Zorbaugh, the township’s director of administration. “And it goes on forever, so their kids can’t sell it off to developers later.” The township includes the small boroughs of Wellsville and Rossville, which have community parks, local restaurants and an elementary school. Plus, a nearby ski resort and a state park offer outdoor adventure.
Historic and new homes along winding township roads
In Wellsville, some Nationals and Victorian homes have front stoops, porches and driveways. Beyond the borough, historic homes, Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes sit on winding county roads. Homes here are more spread out, often at the end of long driveways. Most properties range from $200,000 to $500,000, although less common New Traditionals can go from $600,000 to $880,000 on 7 to 10 acres. The township has a Cap Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Warrington Township Municipal Park and Gifford Pinchot State Park
Surrounding townships don’t have much community space, but Warrington Township Municipal Park is in the heart of its community. The 22-acre parck includes a playground, a basketball court and a fitness trail, plus a pavilion that Zorbaugh says residents reserve for private events like birthday parties and baby showers. At Gifford Pinchot State Park, 20 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails snake around Pinchot Lake. Three boat launches give anglers access to the water, and there’s a beach for swimming. Roundtop Mountain Resort is a regional skiing and tubing attraction. In the summer, it offers summer camps and paintball battles.
Warrington public schools with service dogs in training and ski clubs
Wellsville Elementary School is in the center of the township. Two teachers helped train service dogs in the school, and one of the dogs, Vale, still works there; the other moved on to other projects. The elementary school and Northern Middle School receive a B-minus rating from Niche. B-rated Northern High School has a ski club hosted at the nearby resort.
Italian restaurants and American diners in Warrington's boroughs
Wellsville’s only restaurant is Mamma’s Pizza, a casual Italian joint serving pizza, calzones and pasta. Over in Rossville, Lo Vasco’s Ristorante Italiano is a more upscale option, with a dining room lit by string lights on exposed beams. Ray of Sunshine Diner serves casual American fare. “We have two different types of butchers that sell all the fresh meats, but we don’t have a grocery store,” Zorbaugh says, pointing to Weaver’s of Wellsville and Warrington Farm Meats in Franklintown. “Everyone else goes out to go to the grocery store.” Wellsville has a Dollar General, but the Giant in Dover, about 7 miles away, is the nearest grocer. There's also a Weis Market 8 miles away in Weigelstown.
Annual traditions hosted by the Wellsville Fire Company
Every August, the Wellsville Fire Company hosts an annual carnival that recently celebrated its 85th year. Locals can enjoy amusement rides and games, live music and a craft fair. The company also offers Breakfast with Santa in December, where kids and families enjoy breakfast prepped by elves. The town park is also an important gathering space for the community. “We do a day camp every year for the kids, and last year’s was astronaut-themed,” Zorbaugh says.
Pennsylvania routes connect the township to York and Harrisburg
Rural Warrington Township is mostly car-dependent, and vehicles can sometimes get stuck behind slow-moving tractors on county roads. Wellsville sits along Pennsylvania Route 74, which links to York, about 14 miles south. Locals head there for health care at UPMC Memorial. Rossville restaurants stretch along Pennsylvania Route 177, which heads into Harrisburg, the Keystone State capital, about 20 miles away. Harrisburg International Airport is 25 miles.
