Nausauket
Suburban Neighborhood in Warwick, Rhode Island
Kent County 02886
From quaint Cape Cods to large Colonial Revivals
Many of the Cape Cod cottages and coastal, shingled bungalows here were built before 1950, but there are also split-levels, Colonial Revivals and Traditional homes built between the 1960s and the 2010s. Prices here start at around $315,000 and go up to nearly $610,000. Large homes with private water access, whether overlooking Apponaug Cove or Greenwich Bay, typically sell for between $800,000 and $2.3 million. Moussally says the prices attract first-time homebuyers as well as those looking for a little more luxury. But it’s the water that brings both groups here. “You look out and say ‘I can’t believe this is Warwick,’ because you usually have to be in the southern part of the state for views like this.” While flooding can be a concern during storm surges, the risk is low, even for homes closest to the coast.Waterfront and dryland recreation abound
Sprawled around Apponaug Cove, Nausauket locals are spoiled for choice when it comes to waterfront recreation. Many of the neighborhood’s waterfront homes come with private boat launches, but for inland residents, Ponaug Marina features 150 boat slips. They can be rented seasonally; winter dry storage is also available. The family-owned marina has a bait and tackle shop, too. Safe Harbor Cowesett, the Apponaug location of a regional chain marina, is on the south end of the cove, near the mouth of Greenwich Bay. Between the two ports, there are public boat launches at Arnold’s Neck Waterfront Park, along with a newly renovated playground. Warwick City Park, just east of Nausauket, has several baseball fields and picnic areas. Cyclists visit for the 3 miles of paved bike paths while dog owners come for the pup park. There’s a dirt track for remote-controlled vehicles nearby, too, not to mention the swimmable Buttonwoods Beach. In Nausauket’s northwest corner, Warwick Center for the Arts provides multidisciplinary art classes, camps and workshops for all ages. The castle-like building, once home to an artillery, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cannon niches that flank the front doors are replicas; the original Revolutionary War-era weapons disappeared in 1972 and have never been found.Toll Gate High’s Pathway program encourages focused learning
The Warwick Public Schools district serves Nausauket students. Many go to Robertson Elementary and continue to Winman Middle, both of which get C-plus grades from Niche. Toll Gate High gets a B-minus and offers a Pathway Endorsement program that allows students to concentrate their studies in specific fields. Right now, students can choose between concentrations in computer science or biomedical science. Future pathways focused on law and interactive media communications are in the works; they’re expected to be available to students for the 2025-2026 school year.Saint Kevin School is a private, Catholic school for kids between preschool and eighth grade. The co-ed institution is not rated by Niche. Bishop Hendricken High School, a private, Catholic school for boys between ninth and 12th grades, gets an A. It’s also No. 2 on Niche’s list of the best Catholic high schools in Rhode Island. Both schools are within 4 miles northeast of Nausauket. Eleanor Briggs School is closer. The alternative therapeutic school, which serves kids between first and 12th grades, is off Long Street on the neighborhood’s east side.
U.S. Route 1 heads north to the airport, Providence
Providence is less than 13 miles north of the neighborhood. Via U.S. Route 1, in light traffic, the drive can take about 20 minutes. The highway runs north-south along the west side of Nausauket, parallel to Interstate 95, which is a few miles farther west. Rhode Island T.F. Green Airport is about 3 miles north of Nausauket, just east of Route 1. “You’re not far from the airport, but you can’t even hear it,” Moussally says. “Even though it’s international, it’s not big, and the air traffic isn’t constant.” While this is largely a car-dependent community, there are Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus stops spaced along main roads such as West Shore Road and Buttonwoods Avenue.Local seafood and more on Arnolds Neck Drive
For groceries, there’s a Dave’s Fresh Marketplace on West Shore Road within 3 miles of most homes. The small regional chain grocer is close to Walgreens, a bank and a nail salon, as well as several fast-food restaurants. There are also a few local eateries nearby, including Whalen Café, a pub that’s been a Warwick mainstay for more than 60 years. Nausauket residents can stick closer to home for fresh seafood. On the west side of Apponaug Cove, off Arnolds Neck Drive, Twin Shellfish sells locally caught seafood, from little neck clams and scallops to lobster and oysters, depending on the day. The McGiveney twins, who have been shell-fishing on Narragansett Bay for more than 40 years, started this small operation in 2005. Around the corner, Crow’s Nest Fish House & Oyster Bar offers sit-down food service. It’s been a community fixture since the ‘60s, a favorite for coastal New England comfort food, like chowder and lobster mac ‘n cheese.
