Founded by veterans of the American Revolution from Virginia, who were given the land in return for their service, this Ohio city was initially known as Washington but adopted its current name because of the Virginia practice of putting the name Court House on county seats. Today, the seat of Fayette County is known for its 1880's courthouse building and its historic square. “We’re still a small-town community, but within a 35 to 40-minute commute to Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton,” says Ronda Turner, a Realtor with ERA Martin & Associates. “It’s ideal for commuters who want to get out of the city.” While there are commuters, more local job opportunities are coming.

Fayette County Courthouse
Standing majestically on the corner of Court and Main downtown is the Fayette County Courthouse, which is still in use. “It’s the highlight of the town,” Turner says. “We have festivals that are centered around that building.” It was constructed in 1882, and the two blocks that surround it to the south are a historic district. The courthouse is such a highlight that the streets are arranged so that the courthouse receives ample sunshine throughout the day. The courthouse is the site for the three-day Scarecrow Festival, a mid-September celebration centered around the beginning of fall. There’s live music, food and a carnival atmosphere. The Fayette County Fair takes place at the fairgrounds southwest of downtown for six days in mid-July.

Outside of the historic district downtown, some buildings are showing their age. “Our downtown has struggled the last 10 years, but we’ve seen several business owners doing major rehab to buildings,” Turner says. “It’s been going on for the last couple of years. A real estate company bought a vacant storefront and is putting apartments there.” A coffee shop, deli and restaurants are within walking distance of the courthouse. Walmart, Aldi and The Home Depot are southwest of downtown on Route 62.

New job opportunities about 10 miles from Washington Court House
The LG/Honda plant opening in Jeffersonville, just off Interstate 71, about 10 miles northwest, will create about 2,200 new jobs by the end of 2025. The plant will make batteries for electric vehicles. In January 2025, Amazon announced that it would be building a data service center next to the Honda plant that will employ 100 people over the first five years. In Washington Court House, county and city employees comprise most of the workforce.

Washington Court House City School District gets a C-plus rating from Niche. With only four schools in its system, the district divides its elementary-grade students between a primary school for kindergarten through second grade and an intermediate school for grades three through five. Washington Middle School and High School are both located next door to one another off S. Elm Street covering 6-12th grade.
