Dining in Chevy Chase and shopping in Friendship Heights

About a mile outside Barnaby Woods, Connecticut Avenue has a lineup of local restaurants frequented by neighborhood residents, like Bread & Chocolate, a European style-café with baked goods and other breakfast items; Parthenon Restaurant & Chevy Chase Lounge, a classic Greek taverna; and Little Beast Café & Bistro, a cozy Detroit-style pizza spot. Residents can also get groceries in the area at spots like Magruder’s and Safeway. Students in Barnaby Woods attend Lafayette Elementary School, which received an A-minus on the educational review site, Niche; Alice Deal Middle School, which received an A; and Jackson-Reed High School, which also received an A. District of Columbia Public Schools recently received a $4.1 million grant from the Biden-Harris Administration to expand its Career and Technical Education program. The area also has several private schools, including St. John’s College High School, which received an A-plus. “St. John’s is known for its athletic programs, so a lot of students who are interested in that will go there,” says lifelong area resident Audrey Dahlkemper.

Hiking in Rock Creek Park

Barnaby Woods has a small neighborhood park called Pinehurst Parkway Park, a mostly wooded area with a basketball court and trails, but “The main thing to do in Barnaby Woods is hike in Rock Creek,” Dahlkemper says. “There’s a ton of walking and biking trails along a little stream.” A nearly 2,000-acre national park in the heart of a city, Rock Creek Park is an extremely rare amenity, offering residents over 32 miles of hiking, historic sites and Ranger-led activities, and its greenery seeps into Barnaby Woods, giving the neighborhood its cozy forested feel.
