Burville is a cost-effective neighborhood in northeast DC that offers residents a low-key lifestyle with easy access to great parks and a strong sense of community. The historic neighborhood sits on the District of Columbia — Maryland border, which makes for an easy commute to both Greater DC and the Baltimore suburbs. It’s a great landing spot for those looking to enjoy the Capitol’s dining and entertainment, but also want to be able to slow down and relax when they get home.
Burrville is one of the older neighborhoods in Northeast DC, with most houses in the area dating back to the early-to-mid 20th century. That said, there are a few new builds popping up in the neighborhood, and many houses have recently undergone renovations that have left them looking almost brand new — without diminishing their historical charm, of course. Homes in Burville typically sell for between $400,000 and $550,00, while offering between 1,200 and 2,300 square feet.
Like much of DC, Burrville is close to an abundance of green space. There are a number of well-maintained city parks in and around the neighborhood. Lederer Gardens is popular with both walkers and joggers and aspiring urban farmers, while Marvin Gay Park, named for the locally-grown music legend, has trails, playgrounds and athletic fields and often hosts live music events that draw folks from all over northeast DC. And when locals really want to go for a walk in the woods, the parks lining the Anacostia River, including Kenilworth Park and the National Arboretum, are less than five minutes away by car.
When it comes to shopping, most retail in the area centers around major thoroughfares like Martin Luther King Highway and Capitol Street. There, residents can find a variety of local shops, shopping centers and supermarkets like Save A Lot.
These streets are also home to most of the restaurants in the area, featuring a variety of highly-rated eateries. The beloved neighborhood soul food specialists at Addie Love’s are known for their top-notch wings and sweet potato pie, along with their homemade fruit juices. Poppies Tacos, meanwhile, serves up some of the best tacos and churros in the area.
When it comes to education, most kids in the area attend the local public and charter schools, though there are a fair number of private options within a twenty-minute drive of Burrville. Younger local students can attend Burville Elementary or Miller Middle, before moving on to Woodson High. Woodson was rebuilt in 2011 and is known for its dominant football program, which won 8 city championships between 2008 and 2018.
When it comes to commuting, Burville is about a twenty-minute drive from Capitol Hill and Downtown DC and less than twenty minutes from most of the Maryland suburbs. As for subway access, the Blue and Orange lines pass by the neighborhood, but the nearest stops — Capitol Heights and Deanwood — are both over a mile away, making buses the preferred public transit option for many locals.
Burville is a neighborhood that balances the conveniences and attractions of big-city living with the more laid-back, relaxed attitude of a suburban community, all at a much more manageable price point than you’re likely to find west of the Anacostia.
