Colonial Village
20th-century homes on hilly streets
The residential streets bend to the landscape’s natural contours, and homes are often perched on small banks behind stone walls or boxwood shrubs. Houses here have an established feel, dating back to the 1930s and ‘40s, and incorporate many stylistic elements of Colonial Revivals with stone and painted brick facades. Cape Cods, Tudors and ranch homes are also sporadically dotted around the neighborhood, sitting on quarter-acre lots. Foliage fills the space between the homes, giving them a cozy feel. “You get privacy and seclusion, which is hard to come by in D.C.,” LaRue says. “Unlike other parts of the city where they’re building one thing on top of another, that’s not the case here.” The established three- to five-bedroom homes in Colonial Village are priced between $1 million and $1.9 million.Explore miles of trails in Rock Creek Park
Spanning more than 1,700 acres, Rock Creek Park is a short walk from any home in Colonial Village. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders can explore miles of trails shaded by deciduous trees. One of the longest is the Valley Trail, which spans 5 miles and connects to other trail systems near the Smithsonian National Zoo. Picnic groves are also dotted along the trails, giving people a place to relax or make quick pit stops. The Peirce Mill House offers people a glimpse into the area's industrial history, dating back to the 1700s and 1800s. “The park is essentially split into segments, and part of it includes a golf course,” LaRue says. The 18-hole course is situated north of other amenities like a tennis center, soccer fields and a playground.Highly rated District of Columbia Public Schools
Students living in Colonial Village are zoned for District of Columbia Public Schools, including Shepherd Elementary School, which earns an A-minus from Niche and offers an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. They’ll later filter into Alice Deal Middle and Jackson-Reed High schools, each with an A rating from Niche. Jackson-Reed is D.C.’s largest high school, serving more than 1,900 students, and offers ten unique career-focused academies, including finance, media and hospitality and tourism.Family owned eateries and live jazz nights
While Colonial Village is primarily residential, it is by no means isolated from city conveniences. Everyday essentials can be found in neighboring communities in Maryland, each within a mile. For groceries, there’s a Giant Food nearby. Parkway Deli & Restaurant has an old-school feel with vinyl booths that fill up quickly as locals file in for the matzo ball soup and Reuben sandwiches. The family-owned business was founded in the 1960s and has a small market with wines, cakes and take-out options. Head to The Daily Dish next door on Sunday nights to enjoy live jazz. The casual eatery is also a go-to spot for weekend brunch. Just 1.5 miles east is downtown Silver Spring, where a large mall features recognizable brands, including a Nike Factory Store, H&M and Uniqlo.
Catch the Metro in neighboring Silver Spring
Commuters working in the heart of D.C. can jump on the Red Line at the Metro station in Silver Spring, less than a mile away. Locals driving into the city can avoid major highways and, instead, take 16th Street for nearly 6 miles south, and from there, can explore one of the many free museums, galleries or monuments. Driving an additional 3.5 miles south along the thoroughfare will lead to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. 16th Street also links locals to medical care at Holy Cross Hospital, which sits nearly 3 miles north.
