The farthest reach on D.C.'s east end
Washington, D.C., was initially plotted in a square shape, bisected by the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Chief surveyors and planners included Benjamin Banneker and Pierre L'Enfant, while Andrew Ellicott was the one who laid out 40 marker stones around the District to mark the capital city's borders. The marker stone for East Corner exists to this day, and the neighborhood shaped by it remains the easternmost community in the city, embracing its foundations while continuing to grow. New developments like the Capitol Gateway have popped up, offering close access to East Capitol Street and the Capitol Heights Metro station just a block south in Maryland. "There's a section of new homes in Capitol Gateway from 2006 and 2007, [but] there's still a rich history of folks who've lived here for the last 50 to 60 years," says Melvin Yates, a broker/owner with EXP Realty, LLC, with over 30 years of real estate experience in the region. "We have a family home on Central Avenue there as well," Yates adds.
Upcoming Capitol Gateway Marketplace development
East Corner is part of Ward 7, which the city has marked to receive new supermarkets to give more residents access to fresh food. Most D.C. residents live at least a mile or more from the nearest grocery store. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development intend to develop the Capitol Gateway Marketplace area in East Corner, which currently has modern condo complexes, to include retailers and a supermarket. The mayor announced the plan in 2022, and the project is ongoing.
Rowhouses, century-old bungalows and new condos
Home values in East Corner range from $250,000 to about $650,000, varying by age and square footage. The area's original homes were built from the 1920s through the 1970s, including modest bungalows, Greek Revivals and brick duplexes. "All the neighbors [in these houses] have been there for 50-plus years. You're finding now a lot of great grandparents who've passed the homes down to the parents, children and grandchildren," says Yates. Many single-family homes and rowhouses feature terraced yards designed to fit the hilly landscape and are shaded by large trees. The Capitol Gateway development covers 11 acres of land centered around East Capitol Street and is the hub for much of the neighborhood's new home construction over the last twenty years. Scattered amid the neighborhood's original homes and more recently built apartment buildings are sidewalk-lined blocks featuring Contemporary single-family homes, duplexes and townhouses selling for around $500,000 with an average of 1,800 square feet with three or four bedrooms. "There is a lot of new construction [in this area], but many of the older homes and buildings are actually being rehabbed," says Melissa Melendez, a 19-year Realtor with the Keller Williams EmpowerHome Team. "Homeowners and developers have kept a lot of the charming architectural features and worked around them and made some really nice things happen."
Quick eats at America's Best Chicken & Waffles
Several local restaurants are spread along Eastern Avenue Northeast. Folks can grab entrees like turkey wings, ribs and mac and cheese at Addie Love's, a fast-casual soul food spot. America's Best Chicken and Waffles also serves a wide-ranging menu, from shrimp and cornbread to pizza or Indian dishes like tandoori lamb and chicken tikka masala. Across the street on the Maryland side is Jerry's Carryout for Chinese food or cheesesteaks. Though the area lacks a defined retail center, folks can head 2 miles west along East Capitol Street to get groceries from Safeway in the East River Park strip mall. Upon completion, the upcoming Capitol Gateway Marketplace will bring a small shopping district and supermarket directly to East Corner.
Marvin Gaye Rec Center is where locals go to exercise
East Corner's main green space is Marvin Gaye Recreation Center, located on a grassy triangular campus in the southeast end of the neighborhood. Named after D.C. native and the legendary "Prince of Soul," the recreation center boasts a music room, teaching kitchen, art gallery, tech lounge and fitness center inside, and athletic courts and expansive green space outdoors. The center's piano-shaped playground hits all the right chords, with brightly colored musically themed play equipment, a splash pad for keeping cool and a performance space where budding musicians can hone their skills. The city renovated the rec center in 2018. There's also Watts Branch Playground beside the campus, which has a walking path.
Several D.C. public schools are close to home
Students in East Corner attend District of Columbia Public Schools, including Drew Elementary and Kelly Miller Middle School, which both receive a C-rating by Niche. Nearby H.D. Woodson High is rated a C-minus. Woodson High hosts several Advanced Placement courses and STEM academies and is part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination program to increase college readiness for students. The D.C. Scholars Public Charter School is just across East Capitol Street in neighboring Capitol View. This school teaches grades pre-K through eighth grade and offers before and after-school care.
Capitol Heights Metro for trains or a bus
The Capitol Heights Metro station has Blue and Yellow Line access just a block south of East Corner. "[The] Capitol Heights Metro is busy, though there's not as much foot traffic," says Yates. "It's [got] a huge bus depot as well, so that's popular for folks here. You can go to a number of places from there." Metrobuses stop along East Capitol Street and Dix Street Northeast for greater public transit access. Folks can also drive along East Capitol Street to reach downtown D.C. in 8 miles, taking 30 to 40 minutes depending on rush hour traffic. Since Maryland is just across the street, Prince George's County's points of interest can be reached in minutes. Locals can catch a Commanders game at Northwest Stadium just 4 miles away.
