Where the famous Pennsylvania Avenue meets the Southeast border of D.C. sits Fort Davis, a historic corner of the city that offers the kind of amenities more often found 50 miles outside of a major city, rather than 5 miles.
“It’s a choice area of D.C. because of the lifestyle it offers,” says realtor Jeff Ganz of Century 21 Redwood Realty. “There’s a lot of access to parks, but you’re still close to downtown.”
Fort Davis is a narrow strip of quiet, crosshatched streets that stretches northeast between the border of D.C. and a string of urban parks positively brimming with both greenery and history. Wide sidewalks lined with mature and juvenile maple trees rise from grass dividers that run alongside rows of large, sloped front lawns. Peeking out from behind the trees are a vast collection of 1940s-era row homes and colonial revivals. While some of these homes have updated interiors and modern appliances, Ganz says that many of the homes in Fort Davis are older, “so buyers should be prepared to deal with all that comes from that.” Some are newer builds however, meaning the price range can be very wide; the current median for homes in Fort Davis sits around $400,000 but some get listed for just under $1 million.
Students in Fort Davis attend Anne Beers Elementary before moving on to Sousa Middle School. Once they reach Anacostia New Tech High School, students can enroll in their Public Leadership Academy, a National Academy Fund program that prepares students for careers in law, government, and emergency management. Parents seeking private school options have several to choose from both in the neighborhood and nearby.
The neighborhood’s centerpiece is the Fort Davis Recreation Center, which hosts many youth sports leagues throughout the year, such as flag football, baseball, and basketball. The center also has a tennis court, playground, indoor gym, and studio rooms for dance classes. But if you need a bit more space to spread out, the historic 400-acre Fort Dupont Park abuts the neighborhood to the northwest and provides a wealth of activities for locals to enjoy. This used to be the site of Fort Dupont – one of the six Civil War Defenses of Washington that were built to protect D.C. from southeastern attacks during the American Civil War. Visitors can immerse themselves in this history, or just take in the sights and sounds of wild turkeys crossing the nature trail. There’s even a free community garden and amphitheater, which has hosted a concert series since 1972.
If you need a change of scenery but still want history and nature, simply hop on the Fort Circle Hiker-Biker trail. This 7-mile passageway runs through the woods all the way from Fort Stanton in the south to Fort Mahan in the north and makes stops at each of the Civil War forts lying between. On an early morning ride, split off at Ridge Road for breakfast at the White Corner Restaurant, which serves hot stacks of pancakes every day of the week except for Sunday. If you’re looking to eat in or hit a drive-thru, the Coral Hills Shopping Center is a short drive away, offering hungry stomachs a grocery store and some fast-food options. Getting into the city doesn’t take long, but will require a vehicle, as the closest metro station is roughly 3 miles away.
Whether you’re looking to hit the town or spend the day near home, Fort Davis offers its own special corner of D.C. without sacrificing proximity to one of the country’s most vibrant metropolitan areas.
