Prewar Colonials with new custom homes among the trees
Home values in Kent range from $1.3 million to well over $2.2 million. Much of the homes from the neighborhood's original developments from the 1920s through World War II are still available, taking Colonial-inspired styles. The neighborhood's east side has newer custom homes, usually with geometric modernist and New Traditional styles. Residential lots tend to come with plenty of trees, as zoning bylaws have preserved the foliage that adorns the local streets. There's a mix of on-street parking and straight driveways with attached garages for many homes. Robert Hryniewicki of HRL Partners at Washington Fine Properties says, “One of my favorite streets of all time is located in Kent, and it is very tree-lined. Lowell Street commands one of the highest prices per square foot of land value in the entire capital region.”Battery Kemble Park for history and leisure
Palisades Rec Center hosts a playground and 60-foot softball diamond, as well as a splash park for the humid, D.C. summers. Kent residents can walk to Battery Kemble Park, which forms the neighborhood's eastern border. Battery Kemble was part of Northwest D.C.'s Civil War-era defenses, built-in 1862. In case of invasion, the position had two-hundred-pound cannons aimed toward Chain Bridge and the Virginia border. The cannons are still in good condition, and history buffs can explore the space strolling down the park's forested Battery Kemble Trail. Potomac Palisades Parkway, a lesser-known park with a dense, shady tree canopy, sits just across MacArthur Boulevard. Hikers can climb across large rocks to the other side of Maddox Branch, a creek flowing out from the Potomac. A stone's throw from the creek is Fletcher's Cove, which has access to the Capitol Crescent Trail and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath. Fletcher's Cove offers bike rentals for the trails and kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards and rowboats for the Potomac River. They also have a Tackle Shack and a fishing area for anglers to catch channel catfish or bass. It’s rare to find a fishing spot in the nation's capital, which makes Fletcher's Cove even more valuable as a community institution.Top rated city schools and one of the district's newest institutions
D.C. Public Schools serve Kent's youth for education. Students here are zoned to attend Key Elementary and Hardy Middle School, both of which have A-minus overall ratings from Niche. Students can end their grade-school journey at MacArthur High, one of D.C. Public Schools' newest institutions. It opened its doors in August 2023 and hasn't received a Niche score yet. Private options are all around the city, including D.C. River School, just east of Kent. River School educates students from Pre-K through 3rd grade, challenging them to think critically and work collaboratively with their peers. The Crescent Trail leads to Georgetown, while MacArthur Boulevard leads Downtown
Hryniewicki says, "The other beauty of the neighborhood is [that] it's halfway to wherever you're going, whether that’s Downtown, Dulles Airport or Bethesda." Commuters working with the major employers in Downtown D.C. can take a 5-mile drive east along MacArthur Boulevard or Massachusetts Avenue NW. Dulles International Airport is 20 miles west while Ronald Reagan Airport is 7 miles east of home. Residents are also a couple of blocks away from the Maryland border. They can quickly reach Montgomery County employers and retail via MacArthur Boulevard or take Chain Bridge to explore northern Virginia. The nearest rail access is the Tenleytown—AU metro station, just 2 miles north of Kent. Cyclists can reach Georgetown after a 15-minute bike ride along the Capitol Crescent Trail, avoiding D.C. traffic entirely.Claudio's Table offers Italian, and Chen's Gourmet has Chinese takeout
MacArthur Boulevard hosts a corridor of global cuisines, from fast-casual to fine dining options. The closest restaurant to Kent is Claudio's Table, which serves authentic Italian dishes like branzino and focaccia and unique entrees like smoked salmon pizza for brunch. Further east is Chen's Gourmet, serving Chinese carryout entrees for lunch or dinner on the go. It offers Lo mein, crispy beef, and even Kung Pao "veggie chicken" as a vegan-friendly dish. There's a Safeway for groceries less than 2 miles west on Macarthur Boulevard, just across the Maryland border. Mimi's Convenience is a neighborhood institution serving basic snacks, wine, and beer. Folks head to Mimi's for their variety of deli sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, from bagels with cream cheese and avocado burritos to hot steak and cheese subs or Italian cold-cut hoagies.
