Urban enclave in the beating heart of the District
Mount Vernon Square is a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood just a block east of downtown D.C. In this dense metro-accessible community, the District's best bars, eateries and cultural institutions are steps away from both its historic and modern homes. "People come here for the entertainment and amenities," says Justin Paulhamus, a broker/owner of 4J Real Estate. "There are several bars, and it's within walking distance to the convention center. It's also within walking distance of Gallery Place, where the Caps and Wizards play." Residents can catch a game from D.C.'s own NHL and NBA hockey teams without the traffic. That goes for commutes to major government employers as well. And the Mount Vernon Square metro station allows even greater access to the whole region.
From popular Gallery Place to the hidden Blagden Alley
A mercantile hub in the early 20th century, Mount Vernon Square now boasts dozens of retail businesses. South of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the renowned Carnegie Library sits on K Street Northwest. The ivory and marble Beaux-Arts building was once the city's central public library but is now home to an Apple Store and the D.C. History Center, lined with photographs and documents highlighting the District's rich history. Although the area lacks big-box stores, corner markets occupy the neighborhood's edges, like the Freshfarm Mount Vernon Triangle Market. Diners will find national, fast-casual restaurants and locally owned eateries such as the Capital Grille, which serves gourmet burgers and spiked milkshakes. At Rumi's Kitchen, patrons can sample Persian cuisine and handcrafted cocktails. Other local eateries, like A Baked Joint and dLeña, offer live music and entertainment with their plates. Paulhamus also recommends the tucked away Blagden Alley, which is just a 5-minute walk north on 9th Street and greets visitors with a rainbow-colored mural of the word "love," painted across four garage doors. It’s filled with coffee shops; bars; Michelin-star restaurants like Causa/Amazonia, a reservation-only restaurant with a tasting menu on the ground level and an a la carte menu on the open rooftop deck; and beloved bagel spot Seylou Bakery, guaranteed to sell out every morning. The Marion Street Intergenerational Community Garden hosts events like movie nights in the warmer months.
Mount Vernon Square is central to many local D.C. events
Among the neighborhood's other cultural institutions, Hemphill Artworks curates and exhibits contemporary multimedia work by seasoned designers and emerging artists. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, vendors at FreshFarm Mount Vernon Triangle Market sell an assortment of produce and grass-fed meats, baked goods, tinctures, fresh flowers and coffee beans. The massive Walter E. Washington Convention Center straddles the neighborhood border and hosts international policy conferences, pop culture festivals and comic book expos. And a 10-minute walk down 7th Street NW leads to Capital One Arena. This indoor venue hosts concerts and home games for the Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals.
High-rise condos and Victorian rowhouses
Paulhamus describes the “densely populated” Mount Vernon Square's housing stock as a "residential homes, condo complexes, hotels and a commercial district." Specifically, much of the neighborhood's real estate is either Victorian rowhouses with ornate brickwork and wrought-iron railings or skyline condos with cityscape views. The structures vary in color and style. Home prices range from $375,000 to $800,000 for one-or two-bedroom condos in luxury high-rise complexes, which often have rooftop decks. In comparison, single-family homes run from $1 million to $1.7 million for renovated, three-story Victorians.
Nearby D.C. Public Schools
Students are zoned for District of Columbia Public Schools, such as Walker-Jones Education Campus, which teaches prekindergarten through 8th grade students, and Dunbar High School, which both earn C ratings on Niche. Dunbar High also gets an A rating for athletics, and their football team recently won the DCPS Turkey Bowl in 2023. The Turkey Bowl is essentially the D.C. school system's version of a state championship since D.C. is not technically a state. The game is the city’s biggest event under Friday night lights, bringing in spectators from around the District.
Exercise options at Dunbar Recreation Center
Milian Park is one of the community's green spaces. The triangle-shaped park hosts Mount Vernon’s farmers market and has a small grass field suitable for dog walking or some outdoor yoga. Dunbar Recreation Center has a gym, playground, basketball court and indoor pool that the Dunbar High swim team uses for practice. However, neighborhood residents are free to use the pool during specific times.
Walking distance to Downtown D.C. and a Metro station
One of D.C.'s biggest travel hubs, Union Station, is a mile east of the neighborhood along Massachusetts Avenue NW, with a metro and Amtrak station, and a stop for several major bus lines. The Mount Vernon Square 7th Street-Convention Center Metro station is within the neighborhood and offers Yellow and Green Line access through the DMV (D.C., Maryland and Virginia). The neighborhood is centrally located in the city, and commuters can walk to Downtown D.C.'s major government employers in minutes. Residents can also quickly access major roads like Interstate 395 and U.S. Route 50 that run through Maryland and Virginia.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
