Historic Victorian architecture
Takoma’s vintage homes range from bungalows, to Victorians and American Foursquares. Porches and sidewalks throughout the neighborhood welcome residents to walk around and greet their neighbors. Historic architecture abounds, including one of the original development’s earliest homes on Eastern Avenue. The longevity of the architecture is thanks, in part, to the Historic District designation that Neumann fought for in the 1980s. “That (designation) has helped protect us in many ways. You can’t just tear down these houses and put up apartments.”Multifamily buildings have sprung up adjacent to the neighborhood, with sleek interiors and updated décor attracting young professionals. A one-bedroom condo may sell for around $400,000, while a 1920s four-bedroom American Foursquare may run for $1 million to $1.5 million.
Specialty shops and dining offer local flair
Carroll Street, at the eastern part of the neighborhood, is home to several local specialty shops. The pet supply store Big Bad Woof, sells organic dog and cat food, while the gift shop Tabletop offers unique housewares and knickknacks. The vintage consignment shop Bespoke Not Broke attracts thrift shoppers searching for old-world charm. For groceries, residents can choose from a Safeway off Piney Branch Road at the southwest corner of the neighborhood and the Whole Foods to the north on Georgia Avenue. Fourth Street Market, a mom-and-pop quick-stop store, is conveniently located near the Metro Station. The restaurants within walking distance of the neighborhood offer a taste of the diverse local culture. Kin Da on Carroll Avenue offers Thai food and sushi, while Quilox Restaurant and Lounge on Georgia Avenue serves a menu of African cuisine.
Neighbors gather at Busboys and Poets
The neighborhood culture is evident through events and gatherings held for residents. The organization East Rock Creek Village, which is led by volunteers who help provide services to elderly residents so that they can stay in their homes, hosts get-togethers that attract a diverse array of locals. “The holiday party last year was packed,” Neumann says. Meanwhile, the nearby Takoma Park council puts on a Folk Festival that was originally held as a fundraiser for the historic Takoma Theater. The festival, held in the fall, includes multiple music stages as well as craft vendors. The popular venue Takoma Station Tavern has regular live music performances for residents to enjoy. Busboys and Poets, the combo bookstore and coffee shop that is a DC staple, provides a gathering space for modern-day Beatniks and book clubs alike.Urban lifestyle with outdoor recreation
For recreation and downtime with the kids, Takoma Playground on Van Buren Street provides play equipment, splash water features and a mini skate park. The adjacent Takoma Aquatic Center has a competition pool as well as a children’s pool. Less than a mile to the west, Rock Creek Park includes The 1754 acres of recreation, including historic buildings open to the public and more than 32 miles of hiking trails.
Take the Metro, avoid the traffic
The Takoma Metro Station is located less than half a mile from the heart of the neighborhood and connects to the Red Line that can take residents into the hub of D.C. or north to the Maryland suburbs. Georgia Avenue to the west can take commuters to downtown D.C. within 5 miles, but the region’s notorious traffic means the commute may take up to 25 minutes. Multiple bus stations within the neighborhood offer another alternative to driving.School options for all grade levels
Students may attend Takoma Elementary School, a District of Columbia public school with a B grade from Niche.com. The Center City Public Charter School serves students up to grade 8 and has a B+ rating on Niche and a 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Ninth through 12th graders enroll in Coolidge High School, which has a C+ rating and is housed in a cupola-topped, late 1930s building. Students also have the option of attending the D.C. International School, a charter school for middle and high school students that offers an International Baccalaureate program and is given an A+ rating.
