Truxton Circle
Urban Core Neighborhood in Washington, District of Columbia
District of Columbia 20001, 20002

Widespread building and renovations
Most of the homes in Truxton Circle are single-family rowhouses that sell for $600,000 to $1.25 million. New construction is happening throughout the neighborhood, with historic buildings, like the 1902 Wardman Flats on Florida Avenue, transformed into sleek, modern boutique units. Other historic homes built in the early 1900s have been meticulously updated with new hardwood floors, an open design, two-car parking and outdoor spaces that can customized and used for dining or relaxation. In many cases, basements with walkouts have been converted into living spaces and set up as rooms to entertain in or private guest areas. Condominiums along New York Avenue, North Capital Street and Florida Avenue are priced between $400,000 and $750,000. From renovations to historic buildings like Chapman Stables to brand-new construction, “building projects are changing the look and character of the neighborhood, giving Truxton Circle a more contemporary and upscale feel,” Ashton says.Indoor/outdoor fun
The eight-lane pool at Dunbar Aquatic Center, located in the historic Dunbar High School, is open to the public and free to D.C. residents. Residents can play baseball or tennis at the nearby New York Avenue Recreation Center, and children can swing or explore the playground’s many jungle gyms. Florida Avenue Playground offers a tree-shaded place for community gatherings, with climbing structures that keep kids occupied.Firsts in primary education
Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter, a PK-5 elementary that received an A-minus from Niche, features a unique bilingual education and project-based curriculum focused on sustainability. Famed Jazz pianist Duke Ellington studied art and design at Armstrong Manual Training School, now known as Friendship Public Charter School–Armstrong Middle, which still offers a curriculum laden with literature, art and music. Dunbar Senior High, which scored a C, was the first public high school for black students in the United States.
Pop-up events and happenings
The Bates Civic Association and the Hanover Civic Association plan neighborhood cleanups and movie nights. Certain blocks have their own book clubs, and Truxton Circle is famous for its pop-up block parties. The art studios at 52 O Street also bring a creative atmosphere to the area.
Getting around Truxton Circle
Truxton Circle is within walking distance of several D.C. neighborhoods, including Shaw, Bloomingdale and Chinatown, and is only 2 miles from Capitol Hill. A handful of Metrobus lines run through the area, and three Metro train stations are nearby. The Shaw-Howard University and Mount Vernon Square Metro stations provide access to the Green and Yellow lines. The NoMa-Gallaudet University New York Avenue station offers Red Line access.Grocers and walkable restaurants
Residents can shop at supermarkets like Safeway and Harris Teeter at the corners of the neighborhood. On Saturday mornings, Catania Bakery opens to sell its famous breads, cookies, and biscotti. At Uncaged Mimosas, brunch is served all day, and Republic Cantina offers Tex-Mex specialties in its casual dining room and open-air patio. Uncle Chip’s is a go-to for coffee, a sandwich, and a chocolate chip cookie. Other spots like BBK Cookshop, a corner eatery specializing in Thai street food, or KoChix, a restaurant devoted to the best chicken wings in D.C., satisfy even more cravings.Renewal through public art
Throughout Truxton Circle and nearby NoMa, public murals are a common sight on buildings, fences and parking decks. From expressive faces to geometric designs, public art tells a neighborhood’s story through color and imagery. Truxton Circle’s murals also showcase local artists and help the community see new possibilities for older spaces.
