A scenic Alaskan neighborhood close to nearby cities
Tucked against the Talkeetna Mountains, Fishhook is a rural community that offers a taste of the Alaskan wilderness lifestyle. "The good thing about it is it's close to Hatcher Pass, which is a very popular recreation area," says Marty Van Diest, a broker with Valley Market Real Estate in nearby Palmer. "It's also close to Government Peak, which is a recreational area for summertime hiking and wintertime skiing. If you like Alaska stuff, it's great." This nature-filled community is in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, about halfway between the cities of Palmer and Wasilla. Although the neighborhood is away from the hustle and bustle of Anchorage, its still just a short trip to nearby cities for shopping and dining.
The Fishhook landscape includes lots of space for more private dwellings as well as closer spaced homes for more community interaction.

A mountain playground right at home
Hatcher Pass is a recreation area in Fishhook's northern end, home to several activities. Locals can enjoy a scenic drive along Hatcher Pass Road, taking in the views of the Talkeetna Mountains along the way. Several hiking trails offer a chance to spot wildlife such as marmots, falcons and golden eagles. The area is full of wildflowers in the summer, while the winter brings cross-country skiing opportunities as early as October. Independence Mine State Historical Park offers tours of the gold mine, which operated from 1938 to 1950. Government Peak is a recreation area a little closer to the residential part of the neighborhood but with just as much activity. Visitors can explore this area's trails by hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. There is a mix of easy and challenging trails, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the Knik River and the Chugach Mountains south of the neighborhood. More typical city parks are available in nearby Wasilla, like Newcomb Park, which has a playground, picnic areas and fishing.

Established and modern homes in rural Alaska
While the neighborhood has a rural feel, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley as a whole has seen a lot of growth, including around Fishhook. "I think it's one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. A lot of newer houses have been built since about 2015," says Van Diest. Most of these newer homes are contemporary Craftsman and new traditional houses on 1-acre lots. Still, buyers can find established houses on larger lots that offer a more secluded lifestyle. These are usually Craftsman or cabin-style homes with dense trees surrounding the property, offering privacy and natural scenery. They're typically located in the northern half of the community, with the newer subdivisions making up the southern half. These established homes cost between $200,000 and $500,000. The newer, more suburban homes can cost between $400,000 and $700,000. Buyers should know that the neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Plus, there is a flooding risk in areas along Wasilla Creek on the neighborhood's east side.

Nearby cities offer local dining options
There are a couple of restaurants in the neighborhood, like Hatcher Pass Pizza and Fishhook Bar and Grill, but most residents drive to either Palmer or Wasilla for shopping and dining. Van Diest recommends The Noisy Goose in Palmer, a rustic local spot serving standard American fare for breakfast and lunch. Palmer Alehouse has over 40 beers on tap and is the place to go in town for live music and sports. In Wasilla, Krazy Moose Subs serves sandwiches, soups and salads in a casual counter-serve restaurant. Each city has Fred Meyer and Carrs grocery stores, and Wasilla also has stores like Walmart, Target and Home Depot.
