Out East’s name and culture reflect its diverse heritage
With a history that predates the 1700s, Out East was titled for how early residents colloquially referred to neighborhoods on Waterbury's outskirts. When asked where they lived, they could say "Out East." With a history of Puerto Rican, Irish and Italian neighborhoods, Out East includes has ties to New York in a city known for its blue-collar identity, with communities living close to the brass factories of the 19th century.

East Mountain Park features Little League baseball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts. One of the landmarks separating the East End from Outer East is Hamilton Park, which has a public swimming pool and hiking trails that circle a duck pond. The East Mountain Golf Course was designed initially in the 1930s by architect Wayne Stiles, and it features a layout created for walkable rounds. Out East is one of the closest neighborhoods to Ski Mount Southington in nearby Plantsville, with 14 ski trails, two terrain parks and night ski hours.

Meriden Road has a unique collection of unassuming eateries frequented by locals. One of the area's popular local taverns is Johnny B's Roadside Saloon, a hole-in-the-wall steakhouse known for its chicken wings and rustic Americana-themed atmosphere. Additionally, there are shopping centers and restaurants near Scott Road farther south. Sultan's Turkish Restaurant is one of the most famous restaurants in Waterbury, known for its belly dancing performances and Mediterranean dishes like lamb kebabs. Nearby supermarkets include ALDI on Reidville Drive and Walsh's Quality Market, a neighborhood grocery store with a meat department and a bakery.
Take the CTtransit bus or ride the rail to New Haven
The city's bus system is CTtransit, which operates in multiple cities throughout the state, with accessible Out East bus stops along Meriden Road. The Waterbury train station is about 4 miles west, with daily trips to Union Station in New Haven. A transfer to the New Haven Amtrak gets commuters to New York's Penn Station in just over two hours. New Haven is roughly 35 miles south, and Hartford is about 30 miles northeast on Interstate 84. On the outskirts of Hartford, the Bradley International Airport is approximately 40 miles north.
