Parks and quiet streets define Waterbury’s West End District

The West End District is a quieter, more residential part of Waterbury, known for its tree-lined streets and proximity to the Country Club of Waterbury. Considered one of the more desirable areas in town, the neighborhood has a reputation for being family-friendly and relatively peaceful compared to busier districts in the city. Single-family homes and small apartment buildings sit back from the road. “Closer to the Country Club, the prices get higher, and the neighborhoods become more desirable,” says Ruth Zeiss, a local Realtor with William Raveis. “It starts to look more suburban. People don’t get a lot of yard space, but there are a lot of parks.” While commercial activity is limited, the area’s residential character and access to outdoor amenities make it a steady, settled part of Waterbury’s urban landscape.

The Country Club of Waterbury and community parks offer green space

Outdoor recreational space in the West End District has a mix of private and public areas. The Country Club of Waterbury, founded in 1899, is a private club with an 18-hole golf course, an outdoor pool and an event space that’s popular for weddings and other social gatherings. Chase Park offers sports courts and fields, a playground and a seasonal splash pad. It occasionally hosts outdoor yoga and dance classes, drawing families and fitness enthusiasts from the neighborhood. Nearby, Murray Park provides similar amenities, with athletic facilities, open fields and a playground that serve as regular spots for weekend games and casual recreation.

Colonials, Cape Cods and condos shape the housing market

The West End District features a mix of colonial-style homes, Cape Cod cottages and raised-ranch houses. Many properties are single-family homes, often set on modest lots with driveways and mature landscaping. Sidewalks line some streets, especially those that lead to parks. Prices start around $160,000 for smaller homes under 1,000 square feet and rise to about $580,000 for larger houses with more than 3,000 square feet. Duplexes and four-unit multifamily properties are also present, ranging from $180,000 to $575,000. Townhomes and condos, many built between the late 1980s and early 2000s, offer units priced between $110,000 and $285,000 depending on size and condition. “On the west side of Highland Avenue, there are more single-families, and on the east side are more multifamilies,” Zeiss explains. “And right there in the middle is Town Plot, the oldest neighborhood in Waterbury,” referring to the historic neighborhood that hugs Highland Avenue.

Diners and established Italian eateries contribute to the community

The West End District offers a handful of locally loved spots and neighborhood conveniences. Maples Family Restaurant is a popular destination for breakfast, known for its casual atmosphere and classic diner fare. Just down the road, Le Bobadel Gourmet Market draws regulars for its deli sandwiches and specialty items. “There are also two famous Italian Restaurants, D’Amelio’s and La Tavola,” Zeiss adds. “They’re longtime fixtures in the neighborhood, and the food is good.” Near these eateries, Key Food Supermarket serves as a community grocer.

Public and private school options serve West End District families

Students can begin their education at Duggan School, a kindergarten through eighth-grade public school that holds a C rating from Niche. Many then attend John F. Kennedy High School, which also receives a C rating and offers a variety of extracurriculars, including a gardening club and a young women’s empowerment group. For higher education, the area is home to Post University, a private college offering both on-campus and online programs, and Naugatuck Valley Community College, an affordable option for local students pursuing two-year degrees or workforce training.

Interstate 84 and CT Transit connect to the larger region

Interstate 84 cuts through the northern portion of the West End District, the first leg of a drive to New York City, about 90 miles south. CT Transit serves the area, with most bus stops found on the north side of the interstate. Waterbury Station, located roughly 2 miles east, provides Metro-North Railroad service to Bridgeport, where passengers can transfer to reach Grand Central Station in Manhattan. For air travel, residents typically choose between New York's LaGuardia Airport or Bradley International Airport, which is about 50 miles north in Windsor Locks. On the neighborhood’s north side, Waterbury Hospital anchors a small cluster of transit and commercial activity.
