Glenwood Heights
20th-century homes and bikeable streets
Glenwood Elementary School to the northwest and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church toward the southeast bound the community, which comprises less than a square mile. “A lot of the families with young children go out walking around the neighborhood,” Montoya says. “I see more kids riding their bikes in the neighborhood now versus eight or so years ago.” Narrow cement walkways connect the sidewalks to the front doors of homes built throughout the early-to-mid-20th century. Architectural styles including Cape Cods and ranch-style homes, make up most of the housing stock alongside occasional two-story builds with Colonial and Tudor influences. One-car driveways leading to detached garages and unfenced backyards are also common. Home prices typically range from $130,000 to $310,000.Running errands along Lewis and Grand Avenues
“Lewis Avenue is where most people here go shopping,” Montoya says. “The grocery stores, Aldi and Tony’s Fresh Market are literally within walking distance.” Retailers like Ross Dress for Less, Burlington, Family Dollar and several others also sit along the strip directly northeast of the neighborhood. Similarly, chain restaurants like Popeyes Louisiana Chicken and Burger King sit across the street from the retailers, alongside the locally-owned Jester’s Double D Pizza. Montoya mentions the laid-back Italian spot as a go-to for regulars. “That’s the main one here, and it’s one of the best in Waukegan for pizza." South of the community on Grand Avenue, residents can dine at various restaurants inspired by flavors from Central America and the Caribbean, ranging from seafood at Mariscos Mi Pueblo and hefty platters of stewed oxtail at Taste of Belize. The corridor has numerous businesses, including florists, bakeries, sporting goods stores and a boutique selling lavish dresses for quinceañera birthday celebrations.Morning strolls to neighboring elementary schools
Roughly half of the community’s youngest residents attend Glenwood Elementary School, which maintains a C-minus, while the remainder head to D-plus-rated Whittier Elementary School, across the street along North Lewis Avenue. Considering the proximity of both, most students walk to the campuses. Older students will take the bus to Miguel Juarez Middle School, which holds a D-plus rating, and Waukegan High School. The high school receives a C-minus rating and offers a Dual Credit Program with the College of Lake County. Qualifying students can earn college credits through courses including American National Politics, Physical Geology and several others taught at the high school.Hinkston Park's trail loop and playground
Hinkston Park is a mile southwest, off West Grandville Avenue. Many come to take afternoon walks around its tree-lined trail loop or to let the little ones climb about the playground. Field House Sports, Fitness & Aquatic Center next door offers members various group yoga and fitness classes for all ages. On the weekends, the center’s gymnasium fills for youth sporting tournaments. Colorful umbrellas dot the Waukegan Municipal Beach shoreline while sailboats take off from the neighboring marina. Those making the 4-mile trip east to the beach should keep in mind that there's a $20 parking fee during the weekend.Scoop Waukegan's annual classic car show
Scoop Waukegan, an annual two-day event in mid-July, fills downtown Waukegan’s streets with classic cars from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Around 1,000 participants parade their shiny cars around town on Saturday and then park along the street for the Cruise in and Park show. Those making the 3-mile trip southeast to catch the show also enjoy live music from local musicians and snack on foods from different vendors.Riding the green line at Waukegan Metra Station
Interstate 94 is a 5-mile trip west, granting access to Milwaukee 53 miles north and Chicago 42 miles south. The thoroughfare also links travelers to flights at Chicago O’Hare International, 33 miles south. Vista Medical Center’s care is closer to home, 2 miles east off West Glen Flora Avenue. Public transportation services include Pace Bus stops lining the neighborhood’s bounding roads and the Waukegan Metra Station downtown, where daily commuters can hop on the Green Line for one-hour 40-minute rides into the city.
