Lyon Grove witnessing Waukegan's transformation
Settled along the Waukegan River, Lyon Grove residents get to witness Waukegan’s transformation from front and center. The city is in a period of transition—trying to establish new traditions while maintaining existing ones. With Lyon Grove so close to downtown, residents can experience the changes as they happen. “This area—it’s really naturalistic. Back in the 1800s, when we were a trading post and a summer destination for city folks, our nature preserves were a big highlight,” says Niya Simone, public relations specialist for the City of Waukegan. “We’re trying to refocus on that again. The parks in Waukegan have been awarded a lot of money to rehabilitate.”
Strolls along the Waukegan River and beach days
Just a short walk from most homes, Powell Park’s walking path has bridges crossing the Waukegan River, though many people also like to walk along the water. Kids can play on the playground, and sled down the hill in the winter. The river also flows through Ray Bradbury Park, named after the Waukegan-born author and featuring little plaques about his life. This park offers another playground. Over along Lake Michigan, people can cool off in the summer at Waukegan Municipal Beach, with the two lighthouses—one with a red stripe, and the other with a green one. The park also has a marina with 1,000 slips, and many people come here to watch the sailboats.

Downtown's longstanding theatre and namesake taverns
Being so close to downtown Waukegan, residents can conveniently access the restaurants there. Named after the pseudonym for Waukegan in one of Ray Bradbury’s novels, Green Town Tavern serves burgers and sandwiches with impressive cheese pulls. “We’ve got a really cool microbrewery—they have drag shows and amazing cocktails on tap, and really fun 80s nights,” Simone says, about Nightshade and Dark's Pandemonium Brewing. “The owner is a cooky old punk guy.” Also downtown, Genesee Theatre opened in December 1927, adorned with a large chandelier and red-upholstered seats. “As a nod to being a former movie theatre, they’ll play movies,” Simone says with a laugh. “They just did ‘The Princess Bride’.” The theatre also hosts live performances and musical acts. Down Grand Avenue, people can shop at Lewis Fresh Market, just under 2 miles away. Aldi and Tony’s Fresh Market are also about 2 miles away.

Classic cars and a longstanding Waukegan tradition
Scoop the Loop is one of Waukegan’s biggest traditions of the year—and a longstanding one, according to Simone. In the 50s and 60s, residents used to drive their nice cars through downtown, and Waukegan today invites those with antique and classic cars to bring them to Sheridan Road for a car show and competition. In September, Waukegan celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Viva La Independencia, a parade with people on horses and a festival with live music and vendors.
