A suburban community surrounded by north Waukegan amenities
Marquette Highlands offers an all-encompassing residential landscape featuring a corridor of local eateries and expansive neighboring parks. Houses built during the 20th century comprise most of its tree-lined streets. Restaurants on West Greenwood Avenue invite the residents to savor freshly baked pastries, take-out tacos and hot plate suppers. Getting outside is also convenient, with Larsen Nature Preserve and Bowen Park’s long list of attractions less than a mile east.
Bowen Park's ample attractions
Bowen Park’s castle-themed playground and wooded trails are less than a mile east. Here, little ones climb about its spider web rope set and splash about on the mushroom splash pad. A visit to the park can also include learning local history at Waukegan History Museum or practicing board flips and grabs at the Waukegan Skate Park. “The park stays busy,” says Maureen Solache, a longtime resident and assistant to local broker Larry Desmond of Century21. “They do a Halloween event for kids and have pop-up markets here and there.” Larsen Nature Preserve borders to the west of the community’s southern side, where pups run loose throughout the Callahan-Franklin Dog Exercise Area. Meanwhile, Glen Flora Country Club’s 18-hole course offers a spot to practice swings directly east on the other side of Chestnut Street.

West Greenwood Avenue's local eats
West Greenwood Avenue runs through the community’s southern side and is home to local restaurants like Tute’s Bakery and Taqueria, where residents stop in for tacos and fresh pan dulce. La Fondita Restaurante Mexicano, a family-owned spot three blocks west, is known for its pupusas and occasionally hosts mariachi bands. Bob & Anne’s Restaurant, one of the area’s go-to spots for breakfast and lunch, sits on the corner of the avenue and North Sheridan Road. “I go there often,” Saloche says. “The food is always good, and it’s relatively cheap.” North Lewis Avenue’s shopping developments are a mile west of the neighborhood, where residents can pick up groceries from Lewis Fresh Market and Aldi. A strip mall across the street offers retailers, including Burlington, Family Dollar and Ross Dress for Less.

20th-century homes presenting a variety of styles
Houses built from the early 1930s through the 1980s line the community and showcase a variety of architectural styles, from ranch, split-level and Cape Cod styles to occasional Colonials and Tudors. Most of the community’s homes are clustered together along several rectangular, sidewalk-lined blocks along Golf Road, an arterial corridor that turns into Greenwood Avenue. However, a small pocket of homes on the northwestern side is separated from the rest of the neighborhood by Jack Benny Middle School and Nuestra Señora De Guadalupe church. Potential homebuyers can expect a price range from $150,000 to $400,000, depending on size and condition.

The remainder of the community’s youngest enroll at C-rated Greenwood Elementary School and Edith M. Smith Middle School, which has a C-minus rating. Older students combine at Waukegan High School, which also holds a C-minus rating. The high school offers a Dual Credit Program with College of Lake County, allowing students to simultaneously earn credits for high school and college-level courses. Community block parties and downtown's Scoop Waukegan
The Annual Greenwood Avenue Community Block Party takes place along West Greenwood Avenue in late July and encourages neighbors to gather for an afternoon of music and food. The event includes jump houses and face painting for the little ones alongside the booths of local vendors and community partners. Scoop Waukegan, held downtown 2 miles south, is the city’s most frequented event. Those stopping in can watch as classic cars parade and park along the district’s street and enjoy live entertainment and food from local restaurants.
Commuting along Interstate 94
Amstutz Expressway, situated a few blocks east, links commuters to Naval Station Great Lakes 7 miles south. Interstate 94's entrance is 2 miles west of the campus, connecting residents to Chicago O’Hare International Airport 34 miles south and downtown Chicago 43 miles southeast. Similarly, Waukegan Metra Station 2 miles south offers one-hour 50-minute rides into the city. Vista Medical Center – East is closer to home, off West Glen Flora Avenue a mile south, and Waukegan National Airport, 3 miles northeast. The airport hosts both airshows and flight lessons, which causes occasional overhead noise for those living nearby. Meanwhile, Pace bus stops lining North Jackson Street support local travel.
Amstutz Expressway's presence in film
Though Amstutz Expressway grants travel to the south, it abruptly stops at West Greenwood Avenue less than a half-mile east of the neighborhood as a result of its northward expansion halting in the 1970s. “Around here, we call it the highway to nowhere,” Solache says. She mentions the stretch later functioned as filming grounds for several movies and television shows, which include “Ground Hog Day” and “Chicago Fire.” In fact, the now sealed underpass was known as the “bat cave” for years by locals after 2005's “Batman Begins” used it as the entrance to the hero's lair.
Marquette Highlands offers an all-encompassing residential landscape.
Potential homebuyers in Marquette Highlands can expect a price range from $150,000 to $400,000.
