Just three streets of houses in Pine Trail Estates
Pine Trail Estates stretches just three streets, all lined with bungalows, split-levels and single-family homes with cottage-like roofing and details, with small flower gardens in the front yards. Telephone wires cast shadows on the pavement and sidewalks. Some streets offer canopies of leaves from mature trees, like those on Yeoman Street, while Butrick Street offers younger, less full trees. Homes in Pine Trail Estates typically sell between $150,000 and $300,000.Local neighborhood parks to Waukegan's lakeside beach
Yeoman Park makes up the western side of Pine Trail Estates, with trees shading the walking path throughout the green space and the Waukegan running through the southern side. A bridge goes over the waterway, offering a peaceful spot to listen to the water. Kids can play on the lime green and sky blue playground here, though others prefer to play in the open grassy space making up most of the park.Along Grand Avenue to the west, Hinkston Park has Waukegan’s Field House Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Center. The fitness center itself occupies over 14,000 square feet, with six basketball courts and an indoor track. Spanning 32,000 square feet, the aquatics center almost always has designated lap lanes open but also offers sauna and steam rooms. Three miles east, Waukegan Municipal Beach offers access to Lake Michigan. “I found out recently about kitesurfing—apparently, we’re one of the only beaches that allow kitesurfing,” says Niya Simone, the Public Relations Specialist with the City of Waukegan. “There will be 20 of them out there, just going for it.” While a lot of people already come here to just swim and boat off the shore or stroll along the beach, Simone shares that the city is looking to start improving this space for residents and visitors. “We have a great recreational coordinator trying to revitalize the beachfront,” Simone says. “There are just a lot of people really passionate about the community and trying to help it succeed.”

The school is just on the other side of the Waukegan River, within walking distance of most homes. Miguel Juarez Middle School receives a D-plus. Because residents here are so close to downtown, events are just around the corner. Scoop the Loop is a longstanding Waukegan tradition, where people bring out their classic and antique cars to Sheridan Road for the whole city to admire. The event also includes lakeside musical performances and food trucks. Every month, the city hosts ArtWaulk, a community block party where people can explore gallery exhibits and groove to live musical performances in cafes, theaters and taverns downtown.Buses running along Grand Avenue
The buses along Grand Avenue can also connect Pine Trail Estates residents to downtown Waukegan, just over 1 mile away. A bit to the northeast, Vista Medical Center – East serves the Waukegan community, just 1.5 miles from Pine Trail Estates. Downtown Chicago is about 42.5 miles away, and while commuters can take Intersate 94 into the city, the Waukegan Metra train station is also about 1.5 miles away. When traveling, people can catch their flights at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 34 miles away.Old-fashioned diners and homey coffee shops along Grand Avenue
Just on the opposite side of Grand Avenue, Juan’s Chuck Wagon Restaurant feels like an old-fashioned diner, with tables and a counter overlooking the grill. The breakfast menu features hashbrowns, omelets and pancakes, alongside sandwiches and tacos for lunch and dinner. A bit down the road, Euphoria Café's big windows wrap around the coffee shop, creating a warm atmosphere paired with the wood fixtures and ferns. Along with caffeinated drinks, people can also order smoothie bowls, bagels and crepes. Lewis Fresh Market is about 1 mile down Grand Avenue, with buses also stopping along the route. Residents can also head 1 mile north to shop at Tony’s Fresh Market, Aldi and another Lewis Fresh Market location.
