Full soccer pitch at Malek Field
On the north side of Monroe Street, a large soccer area is part of Malek Field. Heading east on Monroe, just east of Evergreen Avenue, are a couple more places to play soccer and two baseball and softball diamonds. Those fields are west of the Brookside campus of Waukegan High School, one of two high schools in the city where ninth and tenth graders attend. Park in the Glen and Corinne J. Rose Park are a mile south of Washington Hills. Park in the Glen totals around 6 acres and is in the Hidden Glen neighborhood. There is a paved walking path, playground and picnic areas. Corinne J. Rose Park is named after the first female executive director of the Waukegan Park District. The summer is teeming with kids and adults enjoying the SplashZone water park.

Waukegan High School students are split
Public school students in Washington Hills attend Washington Elementary School, rated D-plus on Niche. From sixth through eighth grade, Robert Abbott Middle School has a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio, and parents of students at this school can participate in monthly Chat-n-Chew discussions about dealing with the emotional changes that middle school students experience. Students who attend Waukegan High School go to two campuses. The Brookside campus serves ninth and tenth graders, while juniors and seniors go to the Washington Campus farther east. The middle and high schools are both rated a C-minus.

Downtown Waukegan events
It’s a short drive east to Downtown Waukegan, which has transitioned into a trendy shopping and arts district. The downtown features the monthly ArtWauk in the Arts and Entertainment district at Genesee and Washington streets. Art galleries in this area draw visitors with compelling merchandise for sale and free refreshments. In July, classic car lovers come downtown for Scoop the Loop, based on an old practice where people would show off their cars by driving around in a loop in populated areas. Pace buses on Washington Street and Green Bay Road
Relying on public transportation means a short walk to Washington Street to catch the Pace bus, which also stops on nearby Green Bay Road. Six miles west, the connection with Interstate 94 leads 45 miles into downtown Chicago, and O’Hare International Airport is about 30 miles south. The Waukegan Metra station downtown is two and a half miles away. The largest hospital is Vista Medical Center East, about 4 miles away.
