Local haunts and walkability in Northwest Wausau

Northwest Wasua is a blend of commercial and residential property that dates back to the late 19th century but is still growing today. With Route 51 running along the neighborhood's west side, the Wisconsin River to the east, and Downtown Wasau 2 miles south, residents can take advantage of the city's amenities and attend events along the river. Within the neighborhood, local dining spots and parks are a source of pride and identity, and walkable schools and local pools foster community and comfort.

A century’s worth of homes

Constructed between 1884 and 2021, homes in Northwest represent the city's exponential growth over the last century. Traditional architecture neighbors midcentury ranch-style builds, bilevels and modern Cape Cods with modest yards. New and old-growth trees shade the sidewalks out front, and paved driveways lead to a mix of attached and detached garages. Closer to the Wisconsin River, lot sizes are smaller, but sidewalks run through the area, and some homes have private docks. These waterfront homes are more susceptible to flooding. Additionally, Northwest is home to the Wausau Water Treatment Facility and Regal Rexnord manufacturing company, visible from many backyards. Overall, prices are below average for Wausau, ranging from $75,000 for homes needing repairs to $320,000 for move-in-ready.

The Hobbit house at Monk Botanical Gardens

The neighborhood has several recreation options and more within a few miles. Schulenburg Pool is one of three aquatic centers in Wasau and walkable distance for Northwest residents. Schulenburg has tennis courts and a pool with sprayground. Farther east, Schofield Park borders the Wisconsin River. Walking paths connect the park's baseball diamonds and playground to a fishing pier and boat launch. Monk Botanical Gardens offers a more laid-back experience. The 30-acre property is home to storybook gardens, where trails weave between floral exhibits and the resident Hobbit House, a popular spot for photo ops. Across the water, Athletic Park stadium is home to the Wausau Woodchucks, a local baseball team in the Northwoods collegiate summer league. With a capacity of over 1,000 seats, the venue transforms into a sea of white, blue and green t-shirts throughout the season—the Woodchucks' team colors.

Live music along the Wisconsin River

Seasonal events occur in and around Northwest. Monk Botanical Gardens’ Blossom of Lights is held from September to October. The walk-through light show boasts theme nights, including Sip & Stroll, Pet Night and Trick-or-Treating for Halloween. Two miles south in Downtown Wausau, the acre-wide 400 Block hosts Concerts on the Square each Wednesday from June through August. The free event features live performances by local musicians and street dining. The series overlaps with Fern Island’s Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, a two-day music festival in mid-August featuring national blues musicians and a variety of food vendors. Autumn ushers in Wausau’s ARTrageous Weekend, where art exhibits and performances spread across various locations throughout the city. Those following the circuit are even granted free bus fare to each spot, including the Woodson Art Museum and Center for the Visual Arts.

Catching the bus to Downtown Wausau

Though Northwest residents are largely car-dependent, there are walkable Metro Ride bus stops scattered throughout the community, primarily along Randolph Drive and Campus Street. Few bike lanes exist, but cyclists can cross Central Bridge to ride freely along the River Edge Parkway. This paved path runs parallel to the Wisconsin River’s eastern waterfront and heads a mile south into Downtown Wausau. The nearest emergency room is Aspirus Wausau Hospital, 2 miles south via Bridge Street. Commuters can rely on State Route 29 for the 98-mile drive to Green Bay, while those heading out of state typically fly out of Central Wisconsin Airport, 17 miles south on Route 51.

Colorful murals at Westsider Diner & Lounge

Westsider Diner & Lounge is located on the west side of the neighborhood. Identifiable by its colorful murals of Angus Young, Slash, Ice Cube and Elvis Presley overlooking 3rd Street, the community-focused restaurant sources ingredients from local vendors, such as Zillman’s Meat Market, sells local artwork, and sets up outdoor seating for the annual Labor Day Parade. Blue Willow Café at the intersection of 4th and Merrill Avenue offers a more family-style diner atmosphere. Its menu of comfort foods includes meatloaf and chicken dumpling soup. Groceries are available along Route 51 at Festival Foods and County Market and closer to Central Bridge at Pick ‘n Save.
