Wausau’s Downtown Airport next door

Wausau’s Southeast Side sits just north of the Wausau Downtown Airport, a public-use facility primarily used for aviation and charter flights. Residents are well acquainted with the sound of planes flying overhead. In fact, the area’s aviation culture is even celebrated by the walkable Airport Park, complete with aircraft-themed playground equipment. Living just 3 miles south of the downtown scene, Southeast Side residents are close enough to the city’s attractions and festivities to enjoy the buzz but still come home to an entirely residential enclave. An elementary school within walking distance and a handful of shops and eats within a few miles facilitate convenience in residents' daily lives.

Pink crabapple blossoms complement traditional architecture

Wausau’s Southeast Side is primarily residential, densely packed with Cape Cods, bungalows and ranch-style homes. Traditional architecture is also common, drawing from Colonial and American Foursquare styles. Altogether, homes range in price from $100,000 to $370,000, about average for Wausau. Charter jets and private planes heading to the airport fly over their fenced-in backyards, complete with patios and playsets. Out front, sidewalks interconnect throughout the community, paralleled by tree-lined medians and pink crabapple blossoms in the spring. Most properties were built in the early to mid-20th century, so detached garages are standard. They come paired with paved driveways, where residents sometimes place basketball hoops and lamp posts.

Walking to John Marshall Elementary School

Students attend the Wausau School District, beginning at Hawthorn Hills 4K. The four-year-old kindergarten and early childhood center earns a B-minus on Niche, housed within Hawthorn Hills Elementary. However, young students attend the walkable John Marshall Elementary School upon preschool graduation, which also earns a B-minus on Niche. With a B, Horace Mann Middle is one of just two middle schools in the district, uniting all elementary students east of the Wisconsin River. Wausau East High School earns a B-plus. The International Baccalaureate World School invites juniors and seniors to earn college credits prior to graduation. A rival of Wausau West High School for over 50 years, East High will join the Great Northern athletic conference in 2024, ending the decades-long school feud.

A Southeast Sider’s guide to navigating Wausau

Though Southeast Siders are typically car-dependent, walkable Metro Ride bus stops are widely available throughout the neighborhood, particularly along Kent Street and Grand Avenue. Cyclists will find biking paths closer to the airport, mainly used for recreation. But 3 miles north, it’s the River Edge Parkway that boasts views of the Wisconsin River and its surrounding parks, making for a scenic ride from Oak Park to Winton Street in northern Wausau. The nearest emergency room is Aspirus Wausau Hospital, 5 miles northwest across the river. Commuters rely on State Route 29 for the 94-mile drive to Green Bay. Those heading out of state typically fly out of Central Wisconsin Airport, 14 miles south on Interstate 39.

Aircraft-themed playground equipment at Airport Park

Memorial Park rests on the Wisconsin River's coastline, providing a fishing pier and a modest peninsula with a shaded, grassy field for walking and picnicking. The park's tennis courts, baseball diamond and playground surround Memorial Pool, open from June through August. A mounted Corsair Jet overlooks the playground at Airport Park, a pocket green space next door to the Wausau Downtown Airport that many Southeast Siders can walk to. Locals head north to Oak Park for similar amenities, including a skate park. A pedestrian bridge takes guests across the water to Isle of Ferns Park, a nature preserve with scenic walking paths removed from the downtown buzz. But ultimately, Rib Mountain State Park is one of the city's most immersive natural areas. The billion-year-old hill is home to Granite Peak Ski Resort, considered Wisconsin's largest ski area. Trails for various skill levels weave between the pines, leading to landmarks like the historic Rib Mountain Quarry.

Muralled taprooms and a Friday Fish Fry

Grand Avenue borders the Southeast Side to the east, a thoroughfare lined with shopping and dining options within a mile or so of most homes. Heading downtown, folks can run quick errands at TownLine Market or stop by Bull Falls Brewery, a muralled taproom with beer flights and a rotating roster of food trucks out front. Big-box stops like Pick ‘n Save, Festival Foods and County Market are across the Route 51 bridge, about 3 miles northwest. Farther south on Grand, Hoehn’s Huddle Sports Bar & Grill is a hot spot on game day. The bar actually sells Packers memorabilia, serving classic American grub and celebrating games with a Friday Fish Fry. Taking Route 29 to Rib Mountain, residents can shop wholesale at Sam’s Club or pop by Walmart Supercenter, Aldi and surrounding retailers like Kohl’s.

Wings Over Wausau

Wausau Downtown Airport hosts Wings Over Wausau each June, a festival featuring a professional air show, static plane displays and drone demonstrations. Guests can meet regional pilots while perusing games and activities, including zip lines and a petting zoo. Most summertime events, however, take place 3 miles north in Downtown Wausau. Concerts on the Square is a free summer music series attracting over 2,000 guests. Held at Wausau’s renovated city square, the 400 Block, the series features live musicians and food vendors every Wednesday night from June through August. The series overlaps with Fern Island’s Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, a two-day music festival in mid-August where blues musicians from across the country perform among the wildlife.
