Southwest Jones is all about proximity
Just west of the Wisconsin River corridor, Southwest Jones is a mixed-use community that blends the city’s industry with historical residential streets. Bordered by some of Wausau’s most frequented thoroughfares—Thomas Street and Route 51—the community isn’t known for its quiet but for its proximity to downtown events, public schools and local haunts. Homes dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries line gridded, numbered avenues connecting to bike lanes that take cyclists into the city's heart. Sprawling green spaces with family-friendly amenities surround Marathon County Park immediately north, home of the Wisconsin Valley Fair. From vintage homes to convenient transportation and regional annual events, Southwest Jones offers a glimpse into the Wausau lifestyle.

Gridded residential streets on the southwest side
Southwest Jones was mostly settled between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, represented today by rows of houses predating the 1950s. This active community is compact with ranch-style homes, bungalows and Colonial-inspired architecture priced between $85,000 and $370,000, slightly below average for Wausau. Sidewalks weave between gridded residential streets, flanked by fenced-in yards sprouting shrubs and foliage. Given the neighborhood's age, detached garages come standard. Homes near the thoroughfares of Thomas Street and Route 51 are closest to the action, passed daily by commuters making their way through the city. Meanwhile, those closer to Big Rib River are more likely to experience flooding.

Dining with a ghost at the Wausau Mine Company
Route 51 stretches west of Southwest Jones, where the Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company offers a full bar, "Beer of the Day," live music and classic American fare. Big-box stops like Home Depot, Menards and Festival Foods line the strip farther north. Over on Stewart Avenue, the Wausau Mine Company is an Italian-American family restaurant styled as a gold mine shaft. Rumor has it that the eatery is haunted by a 20th-century German immigrant nicknamed Virgil, who sits beside unassuming guests in their booths. However, those seeking a true local haunt can stop by Nueske's at Gulliver's Landing. Crossing the Route 29 bridge at twilight, it's hard to miss the bright red neon sign that reads "Gulliver's." Giant plastic fish hang from the ceiling inside, apt for the weekly Friday Fish Fry.

The lane intersects with the River Edge Parkway, a paved trail set apart from street traffic that parallels the Wisconsin River. Farther west, cyclists can cross the river to Rib Mountain via the Hummingbird Road bridge, where scenic waterfront views give way to a mountainous horizon line. The park itself is home to Granite Peak Ski Resort, along with trails for various skill levels woven throughout. The nearest emergency room is at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, 3 miles northwest past Route 51. Commuters rely on State Route 29 for the 97-mile drive to Green Bay. Marathon Park’s amphitheater and festival grounds
At the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Park Boulevard, Three “M” Park was aptly named after the 3M manufacturing plant in the neighborhood next door. Residents can walk to the park’s baseball diamonds and playground or check out the steep sledding hill in the winter. DC Everest County Park sits immediately south on a peninsula bordering the Wisconsin River. The 12-acre green space provides boat launches, kayak rentals, a floating fishing pier and even a bait and tackle shop on the premises. Less than a mile north, Marathon Park spans 78 acres of ball courts, walking trails, playgrounds and baseball diamonds. The park’s brand-new amphitheater has a seating capacity of nearly 10,000, hosting local and national performers throughout the summer. However, the largest draw is the festival grounds, home of the Wisconsin Valley Fair.

Concerts on the Square, Concert in the Clouds
Many of Wausau’s vibrant annual events take place downtown, particularly at the 400 Block. Situated 2 miles from Southwest Jones, this renovated city square hosts “Concerts on the Square,” a summer music series that attracts over 2,000 guests from June through August. The series overlaps with Fern Island’s Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, a two-day music festival in mid-August featuring national blues musicians and a variety of food vendors. Art exhibits and performances spread across various locations throughout the city for Wausau’s ARTrageous Weekend. Those following the circuit are even granted free bus fare to each spot, including the Woodson Art Museum and Center for the Visual Arts.
