Werle Park
Homes dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries
The Fox Valley & Lake Superior Rail System cuts through Werle Park, passing historical homes constructed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Traditional architecture is predominant throughout, with nods to classic styles like the American Foursquare, Colonial Revival and Craftsman bungalow. “It’s really just the suburbs that have the newer construction,” says Jon Wasleske, a local Realtor with Jones Real Estate Group. “In older areas like this, there’s not a lot of space for growth. It’s just one of those historical pockets of the city.” Homebuyers can expect paved driveways leading to detached garages and spacious parking pads. Modest verandas overlook sidewalks with wide road verges, shaded by a mix of new and old-growth trees. Yards are peppered with wooden playgrounds and gardens while American flags wave from the front porch. Prices range from $100,000 to $215,000, slightly below average compared to the greater Wausau area.International markets and family-owned watering holes
3rd Avenue is home to a handful of small businesses within walking distance of Werle Park residents. Flowers mark the entrance of The Chocolate Shop, a locally-owned chocolaterie serving sweet confections, including cupcakes, doughnuts and imported chocolate treats. Locals can head to Kohlman’s Inc. for quick grocery runs, a small store selling fresh produce, meats and various Asian ingredients. Opening its doors in 2015, M & R Station is a family-owned watering hole where dollar bills signed by loyal patrons decorate the walls. From beer on tap to classic American fare, the bar hosts live music and events like a Fourth of July cookout. Along 17th Avenue, Pick ‘n Save and Festival Foods are surrounded by casual eats like Starbucks and Milwaukee Burger Company. However, the area is also home to various international eateries and markets, including Taqueria El Zebas, Hmong Eggroll, and the Super International Food Store.A bustling arts scene at the 400 Block
Located less than a mile from Downtown Wausau, Werle Park residents are close to some of the city's most popular events and festivities. Concerts on the Square is a free summer series attracting over 2,000 guests. Held at Wausau's renovated city square—affectionally known as 400 Block—the series features live musicians and food vendors every Wednesday night from June through August. "We installed that stage a few years back, and it's become this trendy space," says Michelle McCarthy with Marathon County Parks, Recreation & Forestry. "Chalkfest is one of my favorites. Every July, people rent squares on the sidewalk and do chalk drawings. Little kids can do it, adults can do it, whoever wants to buy a square can join in." Held each June since 2004, Chalkfest is just one fragment of the city's bustling arts scene, which culminates at Wausau's ARTrageous Weekend. The festival has four locations across downtown and features art exhibits, live performances and free city bus service for those traveling the circuit.Walkable public & private schooling
Students in Werle Park are zoned for the Wausau School District, beginning at G.D. Jones 4K. The four-year-old kindergarten and early childhood center earns a B-minus on Niche, along with Lincoln Elementary, a walkable school located on 6th Avenue. John Muir Middle earns a B-plus and provides after-school programming, including STEM programs, community service opportunities and arts activities. Enrolling grades K-8, Trinity Lutheran School is a private, spiritual alternative currently unrated on Niche. Occupying a block between 5th and 6th Avenues, the school is connected to the historical Trinity Lutheran Church, built in 1908. Students wrap up at Wausau West High School, which earns an A-minus.Marathon Park is home to the Wisconsin Valley Fair
Riverside Park is situated on the Wisconsin River, just a few blocks south of Werle Park. The ball courts, playground and paved walking trails offer scenic waterfront views alongside a pedestrian path to Picnic Island’s secluded natural area. To the west, Marathon Park spans 78 acres of ball courts, walking trails, playgrounds and baseball diamonds. The site also has indoor facilities, including an ice rink that’s home to several high school hockey teams, a figure skating club and the Wausau Cyclones, the city’s minor league hockey squad. The park’s brand-new amphitheater has a seating capacity of nearly 10,000, hosting local and national performers throughout the summer. However, the largest draw is the festival grounds, home of the Wisconsin Valley Fair. Annually, from July to August, Werle Park residents are within walking distance of the fair’s food vendors, carnival rides, animal shows and entertainment, including a demolition derby. Locals are also free to walk and jog throughout the university’s campus, which borders Marathon Park to the east.Navigating Werle Park
Though Werle Park residents are primarily car-dependent, the neighborhood does provide a handful of walkable Metro Ride bus stops on 3rd, 5th and Stewart Avenues. Those preferring to pedal will find designated bike lanes on 1st Avenue and Thomas Street, heading across the Wisconsin River about a mile east into Downtown Wausau. The River Edge Parkway runs parallel along the waterfront, yielding scenic views set apart from the street traffic. The nearest emergency room is at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, 2 miles west past Route 51. Commuters rely on State Route 29 for the 98-mile drive to Green Bay. Those heading out of state typically fly out of Central Wisconsin Airport, 15 miles south on Interstate 39.
