Westies is a well-positioned Wausau community

Location plays a prominent role living in Westies. Aptly named for residing a mile west of Downtown Wausau, the neighborhood is within walking distance of several area schools and local businesses. Further, residents can easily access downtown events and celebrations as well as commute to the city's largest employers located 7 miles or less from homes. Carnival rides & pig racing at the Wisconsin Valley Fair

Marathon County Park has hosted the Wisconsin Valley Fair since 1868. Today, residents of Westies can walk to the festivities. “At the beginning of August, all the 4H kids bring their animals out to be judged,” Kinney says. “They combine a lot of traditional county fair activities with performers and pop-up stores and rides.” From beer stands and carnival rides to pig racing and a demo derby, guests can peruse dozens of attractions and vendors before settling in for fireworks on the last night. The following month, residents line 3rd Avenue with lawn chairs, balloons and candy for Wausau’s annual Labor Day Parade. Local bands, political candidates and a handful of unions throughout the city debut their colorful floats along the strip. The Westsider Diner & Lounge even prepares outdoor seating in anticipation of the day, offering a prime view from the parking lot out front.

Residents live within 7 miles of Wausau’s largest employers

Wausau’s largest employers are within commuting distance of Westies, Aspirus Wausau Hospital, 2 miles northwest, and the Wausau Business Campus, 7 miles west. “Our hospital is very large,” explains Julie Kinney, a staffer with the Marathon County Public Library – Wausau. “Both of my parents work there, it’s a pretty big deal in the city. We also used to house Wausau Insurance, which was bought out by Liberty Mutual.” Though residents are car-dependent when it comes to commutes, Metro Ride bus stops line most streets in Westies. Cyclists can cross the Wisconsin River on Bridge Street to reach the River Edge Parkway, which heads a mile or so downtown. Those traveling out of state typically fly out of Central Wisconsin Airport, 15 miles south on Interstate 39. While the Wausau Downtown Airport sits just 4 miles south, it’s a public-use strip primarily used for charter flights and seaplane operations.

Cheesecake, brunch plates & Gibson Guitars on 3rd Avenue

North 3rd Avenue connects two major Wausau thoroughfares: Route 51 and Stewart Avenue. Local businesses are along the strip, which passes through Westies. It’s hard to miss the pastel pink awning at Sugar ‘n Spice Cheesecakes & Coffee, a café serving neatly packaged cupcakes, cheesecakes and other treats. Westsider Diner & Lounge serves hearty, American fare and uses fresh ingredients sourced from local vendors like Zillman’s Meat Market. The diner sells local artwork and sports an interior with colorful murals of Angus Young, Slash, Ice Cube and Elvis Presley. Up the road, Jerry's Music has supplied instruments to local musicians and served as a hub for lessons since 1958. Groceries are available at Pick ‘n Save on 1st Avenue and County Market and Festival Foods on 17th Avenue.
