Little Wauseon has lots of heart

Wauseon is the seat of Fulton County and just a 40-mile drive from Toledo, Ohio. This town includes quiet streets with classic Midwestern farmhouses, Tuesday night antique car cruises down Fulton Street and locally owned businesses and restaurants. Whether getting in 18 holes at the golf course, or spending a Saturday at the public library, Wauseon residents value their little town with a lot of heart.

Classic cozy and spacious Midwestern homes

Houses here vary from ranch-style homes to split-levels and classic Midwestern farmhouses with roomy yards and driveways. “Most houses are right near town, and you’ll see prices around $200,000 to $300,000,” says Ginni Neuenschwander, a Realtor at Howard Hanna who has been selling houses in Wauseon since 1991. Finding three or four-bedroom houses under that $300,000 price isn’t uncommon, and for custom-built homes, former farmland and green lots with generous acreage are ready for new development.

Roll down the windows and Super Cruise

Fulton Street is the hub for festivals and events, from Wauseon’s annual Christmas Parade to summer Tuesday night Cruises. Every May through August, antique car owners spend Tuesday nights driving their classic cars down Fulton Street. “On the third Tuesday of each month, they host a Super Cruise, where you can buy from vendors and listen to a live band right in town,” says Neuenschwander. “Our slogan is ‘The City You’ll Take to Heart,’ and we really do.”

An easy drive to Toledo

Whenever there is a need to head to Toledo, Wauseon residents hop on the Ohio Turnpike and drive 40 miles to the city. The Fulton County Airport is just a few miles north, open to aviation enthusiasts, but it’s not for commercial travelers. The Fulton County Health Center is right in town and has emergency services, behavioral counseling and health and wellness programs. It is also the home of the Fulton Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A whale of a tale

The Wauseon Public Library is an original Andrew Carnegie building that broke ground in 1905. “This community we serve is diverse,” says Keri Black, library director of the Wauseon Public Library. “That’s why our library is an all-inclusive space with much more to offer than just books.” The library hosts monthly family craft nights, cookbook clubs, true crime discussions and a free book program. Teens can take advantage of the new teen lounge, and kids can see the life-sized blue whale tail story time rug, received from the library’s fellowship with the National Space Science Center.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process. Often times then not it's mostly fast food places that are hiring. Other job opportunities include Walmart, Chiefs Supermarket, and little shops. There is also a hospital in the town where many adults are able to work at. Besides that, if looking for a job one must probably have to travel outside of the town.

It is a nice quiet town with friendly people. The neighborhoods are safe and well kept. I believe it would be a great place to raise a family.

In my community the local businesses are the best around. Our town has multiple small stores that families within the county have created. A few of them include clothing stores, from high fashion to resell children stores. A newer buisness opened last summer for the motorcycle riders in our community. Our town is expanding quickly, and so are our business.
