Settling into the pastures
Locals agree that Wayne can’t offer the same perks as the state capital to the north, but generations of community members continue to thrive nonetheless. “Everyone who leaves Wayne almost always comes back eventually,” says Audrey Worley, a lifetime resident and Town Clerk. “The town has this family feel; everybody knows everybody. I moved back here after 20 years and people still remembered me!” Between its expansive fields, small town center and neighboring towns, Wayne is decidedly a place for folks looking to settle into the pastures. “It’s a hometown community,” she continues. “The good ole boy kind of feel.”
Rural ranch-styles with outbuildings in Wayne
Ranch-style homes line the pastoral subdivisions of Wayne, featuring a variety of exterior styles including standard brick, Spanish-revival and Craftsman. Many properties include outbuildings like large sheds and separate garages with nearby gardens, shaded by mature trees. Though most homes have single or two-car garages, others have carports at the end of gravel driveways. Locals can count on patio chairs, grills and gardening supplies to decorate their small verandas. Wayne’s homes average at around $190,000, but most properties are priced between $75,000 and $250,000.

Smiley’s Quick Stop
Family Dollar is the only commercial retail spot in Wayne aside from local businesses selling farming amenities. But Smiley’s Quick Stop is the place to be in the morning for generational locals. “The guys always meet there,” Worley says. “When my grandfather lived here, they all played dominoes at the cotton gin. And when that closed, they went to Smiley’s.” The Farmer’s Union Co-Op is located along N Seifried Street, while Redman Ranch Equine Rehab and Fitness provides top-of-the-line equipment and accommodations. Just 8 miles up the road, the town of Purcell has popular food chains like Starbucks, Subway and Braum’s. The Walmart Supercenter is just off Highway 77, along with Sonny’s Café. This greasy spoon serves home-cooked Oklahoma favorites in an eclectic, barn-style setting. Additionally, folks can find a Natural Grocers and Sprouts Farmers Market about 28 miles north in Norman.

The elementary, middle and high school carrying the town’s name share one large campus, making for a convenient commute. Wayne Elementary earns a B-minus on Niche, while Wayne Middle gets a C. The area high school receives a C-plus, enrolling around 150 students, with each grade holding fewer than 45 students.

8 miles to the nearest parks and rec scene
The rural nature of Wayne lacks a vibrant parks and recreation scene, but the nearby towns of Purcell and Lexington, 10 miles northeast, help compensate with their own wildlife areas. Sharp Memorial Park and Splash Pad offers a playground, scenic overlook and a strenuous stairway built in 1939, ideal for jogging. Purcell Lake is nearby, a 150-acre body of water for fishing, kayaking, boating and swimming. Trails surround the lake as well, welcoming both hikers and bikers. Those looking to travel a bit further can enjoy the Lexington Wildlife Management Area, which includes its own shooting range. Or folks can check out the Thunder Valley Raceway Park, open seasonally for auto-racing.
Twirling on the dirt dancefloor
Wayne’s annual New Year’s Eve Bash at Redman’s Ranch means twirling on the dirt dancefloor, party games and karaoke. However, year-round events are more likely to be found in Purcell, Lexington and Norman. The Purcell Farmer’s Market lasts from June through September in the Santa Fe Plaza on Main Street. At Purcell Lake, residents can attend the annual Carp Fishing Tournament or the Independence Day Celebration, packed with food, games and fireworks. Lexington’s Fall Festival features a talent show, chili cookoff and a pumpkin patch. And fans of OU can catch a game in Norman at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium or Lloyd Noble Center.
The Amtrak to OKC
Wayne’s thoroughfares are limited to Highway 77, heading north to Purcell, and Route 59, heading east and west to Rosedale and Payne, respectively. One can expect to drive a minimum of a few miles to reach nearby amenities. While the rural town center has no public transportation of its own, the Purcell Amtrak 8 miles north takes residents to Oklahoma City and beyond. OKC’s Will Rogers World Airport is about 45 miles north. Thankfully, Purcell Municipal Hospital is much closer, 8 miles up the road in Purcell.
