Edgemont is a small neighborhood on the outskirts of Smithsburg, Maryland, with a total population of roughly 220 people. Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it’s little more than a two-lane country highway weaving through farms and woodland. “It’s a prime example of mountain living,” says Realtor Chris Dickerson of the Glocker Group, who has lived in Washington County for 47 years. “The Appalachian Trail is a big draw for folks, and it’s near Fort Ritchie, which is on its way to becoming a destination spot. It’s attractive because it’s not too far from places like Hagerstown, but it is far enough.” Residents will likely only ever hear occasional train whistles despite the tracks that cut through the community, and regardless of the development of neighboring areas such as Cascade and Hagerstown, Edgemont has remained appealing to prospective buyers due to its rural quietude.

Between High Rock and Hagerstown
Edgemont backs up against the dense woodland of the Appalachian Mountains. Hikers flock to this area year-round due to its proximity to scenic vistas and overlooks that are accessible from nearby trails. “High Rock is pretty close, basically in between Edgemont and Cascade,” Dickerson says. “There’s an old Army base up there that if you get too close you might find yourself in trouble, but people used to go hang gliding off High Rock a lot. It’s got beautiful views of the whole area.” The Smithsburg Athletic Fields are just under 3 miles from the neighborhood, with facilities to enjoy pickleball or softball games with friends. The town is also home to the Smithsburg Little Sluggers, the only Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Chartered youth baseball league in Washington County. This organization has hosted pickup and rec-league games for area children aged 4 to 18 since 1965.
A collection of country homes in the Appalachian foothills
Houses in this neighborhood sit across wide fields and two-lane country roads from one another, with views of the mountains dominating the horizon. “Edgemont is mostly detached single-family homes,” Dickerson says. “Along the main road, you’ll see everything between quarter-acre and 3-acre lots. I’d say most were built between the 1930s and the 1960s.” Ranch-style homes, usually featuring large front lawns, backyards and long driveways, tend to price between $230,000 and $350,0000. Cape Cods are also available, with prices ranging from $235,000 to around $530,000 depending on when they were built, and split-levels cost between $330,000 and $400,000.

North and west on Jefferson Boulevard
Edgemont sits back in the expanse of Washington County, far from any major interstates and highways. “Route 64, or Jefferson Boulevard as it’s known locally, is how you’d get to Hagerstown from there,” Dickerson says. The trip along this two-lane state road is about 11 miles, looping around Smithsburg and heading past Yingling’s Golf Center and Hagerstown Community College. This road is also the route to nearby Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, about 8 miles to the north.
Dixie Diner and Wolfe’s Den
The closest grocery store to the neighborhood is Martin’s in Smithsburg, just over 4 miles south, while the nearest big-box retailer is the Walmart Supercenter in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, about 6 miles north. Local sources for fresh produce are abundant, with the Washington County Farmers Market in Hagerstown on Wednesdays and the Fort Farmers Market in Cascade on Fridays. There are several small restaurants about 3 miles south in the heart of Smithsburg, such as the Dixie Diner, which has been serving classic American comfort food since 1951, and the Wolfe’s Den, a local haunt on Water Street that occasionally hosts live music.

The recent development of Hagerstown and Fort Ritchie
Locals looking for a night out are most likely to head 12 miles west to Hagerstown’s Meritus Park, home of minor league baseball’s Flying Boxcars. There’s also the Mason Dixon Dragway racetrack, which hosts weekend drag races at eighth- and quarter-mile distances. Recently, historic Fort Ritchie in Cascade has become a destination for entertainment. “Fort Ritchie is being developed significantly right now,” Dickerson says. The community plans to add a local brewery, restaurant and art gallery. “Right now there’s a wedding venue, the Ritchie History Museum, a spa and a few other things. They host a farmers market and a haunted house there, too. It’s an up-and-coming destination, and they’re working hard to make it more attractive every day.”
