While Weirton works on reinventing itself after the closing of steel mills, some of those facilities are being repurposed and becoming major employers again. The Weirton Steel Mill on Main Street is now occupied by Form Energy, a battery manufacturing plant that opened in 2024 and is already going through an expansion. By late 2024, the factory is expected to employ 800 people when the project is completed. The transformer facility that was once the Cleveland Cliffs mill will be open in early 2026. A Walmart Distribution Center is 12 miles to the west in Wintersville, Ohio, while Amazon has a Fulfillment Center 17 miles northeast in Imperial, Pennsylvania. Kids attend schools in the Hancock or Brooke County districts, depending on which side of the county line they live. For Brooke County, there’s Brooke Primary School North, which does not have a Niche grade. It serves kids through second grade. Brooke Intermediate School North gets a B-minus, serving third and fourth graders. Fifth graders are the youngest at Brooke Middle School, and the school receives a C. Brooke High School has over a dozen Advanced Placement courses. The school gets a C overall grade. Hancock County schools include Weirton Elementary, Weir Middle and Weir High School. The elementary school is rated a B-plus, while the middle and high schools get a B-minus.
