A narrow northern panhandle neighborhood with lower taxes and jobs

Terrace Heights differs from the surrounding neighborhoods in the West Virginian panhandle city of Weirton. While the hilly geography of the area tends to extend into other residential areas, that is not the case in Terrace Heights. “People in this neighborhood mostly have level yards, which doesn’t happen anywhere else in the city,” says Carla Slusarek, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Mortimer Realty and a Weirton native. A level yard isn't the only thing the neighborhood has going for it, says Slusarek. "People are attracted to this area because of lower taxes in West Virginia, compared to Pennsylvania and Ohio." She explained that the lower taxes appeal to commuters who make the 35-mile drive to Pittsburgh. Commutes for work aren't necessary for work, however, as Weirton has a few major employers of its own. “Weirton Medical Center, which will soon be WVU Medicine, is one of the biggest, and Form Energy will employ 800 people,” says Evan Cuomo, an associate broker with Cedar One Realty. Form Energy is a newly constructed battery manufacturing plant that plans to expand.

There are level homes in Terrace Heights

Forests surround the neighborhood on nearly all sides, buffering it from commercial areas. Within the community, narrow sidewalks are common, but not throughout, and narrow backstreets lead to detached garages and parking behind homes. Generally, however, residents park on the street or utilize driveways and attached garages. Homes are primarily single-family split-levels, Cape Cods and ranch-styles from the 1950s to the ‘70s with three to four bedrooms, mostly not bigger than 2,000 square feet. Prices range between $30,000 and $190,000, with homes on the lower end needing renovation. The First Street website, which tracks environmental concerns, puts some homes in this neighborhood in the moderate fire risk category due to bordering wooded areas at risk of wildfire. Nearby houses of worship include Morning Star Baptist Church, Shiloh Apostolic Faith Church and the nondenominational Impact Church.
