North of Pennsylvania Avenue
The Weirton Heights North neighborhood on the north side of Weirton, about 4 miles from downtown, is part of a city that’s trying to revitalize itself after the decline of the steel industry. Throughout much of the 20th century, the city was a thriving steel mill city employing thousands. “The toughest time for Weirton started in the 1980s and declined from there,” says Rachel Keeney, the executive director at the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The last 10 to 15 years, we’ve seen people putting an effort to turn things around.” Part of that turnaround is the repurposing of old steel mills into new job opportunities. Currently, the Weirton Heights North neighborhood, along with others in the city, has many people who work in Pittsburgh.
Top of West Virginia
The city of Weirton is in a unique area of West Virginia. Because it’s in the narrow panhandle of the state, the eastern and western borders of the city are state lines. The Ohio River, which is the Ohio state line, is the western border of the city, while the Pennsylvania line is the eastern border just 5 miles from the river. “The past 20 years, it’s become a bedroom community for Pittsburgh,” says Jim Arehart, a Realtor with Century 21 Greathouse Realty. “People don’t want the higher taxes in Pennsylvania. They build and buy in the panhandle.” The neighborhood is about 35 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. “It’s easy to drive to Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins or Pirates games and be back home at a reasonable time,” says Evan Cuomo, associate broker with Cedar One Realty.
