Residential lanes and city blocks near Pennsylvania Avenue

Homes here sit atop Weirton’s rolling hills. Buyers can find rows of raised ranch homes and minimal traditional homes with Cape Cod-style forms, arranged on narrow residential roads. Most of the area’s homes were built between the 1940s and 1960s, with common design elements including drive-under garages and covered porch entrances. Exteriors are usually made of brick and vinyl. Home values mostly range from $50,000 to $240,000.

33 miles to Pittsburgh

Cove Road and Pennsylvania Avenue are Weirton Heights South’s primary connections to the greater Weirton-Steubenville area. Near the neighborhood’s center, Three Springs Drive connects residents to U.S. Highway 22 for long-distance travel. Downtown Weirton is about 3 miles west of the area, while Steubenville is 7 miles southwest, across the Ohio River. Commuters traveling into Pittsburgh can expect a 33 mile drive east.

Walmart, Kroger and Mexican cuisine

Many of Weirton Heights’ most convenient shopping and dining choices are just east of the neighborhood along Three Springs Drive or along Pennsylvania Avenue, which runs north of the neighborhood. Aldi and Walgreens sit between Weirton Heights South and the east end of Weirton Heights North, alongside retail stops such as Dollar Tree, Walgreens, Gabe’s and Big Lots. Going south near Route 22, Kroger, Busy Beaver and Big Lots offer specialized closeouts and sale items, while Walmart is a go-to for everyday items.

The Three Springs Drive area offers a mix of Weirton originals and chain restaurants. A wall of desert vistas and sugar skulls set the tone at Crazy Mexican Restaurant & Grill, which offers a broad menu of southwestern specialties. Mario DiCarlo’s Pizza offers pies baked in the local style, with cold toppings placed on a warm, rectangular crust. For casual chain fare, locals can also head to familiar stops like Wendy’s, Eat ’n Park and Dairy Queen nearby.

A quick drive to Starvaggi Memorial Park and Pool

Northeast of the neighborhood, Starvaggi Memorial Park offers courts for roller hockey, badminton, and bocce. In the summertime, visitors can also stop by the park’s Olympic-sized pool to take a trip down the waterslides or play a game of water volleyball. Steve Dorich Memorial Park is a smaller neighborhood park on the northwest side of Weirton with a picnic area, basketball courts and a playground. Beyond the Weirton city limits, locals can also head north to New Cumberland for camping trips to Tomlinson Run State Park or south to Wellsburg for golfing and fishing at Brooke Hills Park.

Days of teaching and learning at Hancock County Schools

Weirton Elementary School serves about 800 students across the West Virginia side of the northeast Ohio Valley, offering courses for kids from pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. Niche gives the schools a B-plus. Weir Middle School earns a B-minus grade. Students can earn college credit or enroll in advanced career and technical classes at Weir High School, which offers Advanced Placement, dual-credit courses and other options designed to set career foundations. The school sits on the same campus as the middle school and earns a B-minus.

High school football and Oktoberfest celebrations in Weirton

In the fall, Weir High School’s Red Riders take to the football field. The school’s team takes on opposing teams from across the Ohio Valley, including matchups against local rivals Oak Glen. Close to Pennsylvania Avenue, German Biergarten hosts a lively mix of open mic nights, karaoke sessions, and events like Oktoberfest celebrations, all with a rotating selection of beers and seasonal cocktails.
