Residential community near big-box stores

A bedroom community off a major highway, Woodlawn Estates is close to big-box retail stores, beloved local restaurants and various supermarkets. The area’s proximity to Three Springs Drive and its major retailers make grocery trips and dining out a simple endeavor, while sharing the access to the greater Ohio Valley. “Weirton’s a very centrally located community. You’re thirty minutes out from Pittsburgh, an hour out to Cleveland and everything else,” says Jim Arehart, a Realtor with Century 21 Greathouse. Arehart has more than 8 years of experience selling homes in Weirton and neighboring communities like New Cumberland and Chester.

Less than a mile from Kroger, Walmart, Gabe’s and more

Aldi and Kroger are both nearby for grocery trips, while general retailers like Walmart and Big Lots are also close. Other stops in the area include Gabe’s for discounted clothing, Busy Beaver for hardware and Advance Auto Parts. Restaurants along Three Springs Drive include a blend of local eateries and familiar casual chains. Recommendations from Arehart include Dee Jay’s BBQ Ribs and Grille, a Weirton original for pork and brisket that first opened in 1980. The restaurant pairs ribs, chicken tenders and coleslaw with tropical décor, including murals with island vistas and long-leaf potted plants overhead. Down the street at La Cucina Italian Grill, a simple sit-down restaurant setting gives way to one of the city’s favorite spots for Italian fare, such as lasagna, linguini with meatballs and cheesecake. Tacos, piña coladas and burritos are mainstays on the menu at Crazy Mexican Restaurant & Grill, where steam from platters of sizzling fajitas rises to papel picado banners hanging from the exposed industrial-chic walls and ceilings.

33 miles from Pittsburgh

U.S. Highway 22 runs just south of Woodlawn Estates via Three Springs Drive. Residents are about 3 miles east of downtown Weirton and 7 miles northeast of downtown Steubenville. Commuters headed into Pittsburgh can expect a 33-mile trip northeast. While the city operates a bus route that stops at the Walmart on Three Springs Drive, most residents rely on travel by car to get around. For emergencies, Weirton Medical Center is about 2 miles east of the neighborhood. Folks traveling beyond the Ohio Valley and Panhandle area can catch flights out of Pittsburgh International Airport, about 20 miles away.

Mid-20th century living at the top of West Virginia

Most of Woodlawn Estates’ properties are single-family homes built between the 1950s and the 1980s. Residents live in a mix of split-level homes, ranch-style properties and minimal traditional houses. Sales in the area can vary, with homes spending anywhere from 3 days to 10 months on the market. Values generally range from $130,000 up to $380,000. “Weirton’s an attractive market for buyers because the property taxes in West Virginia are going to be a lot lower than in Ohio or Pennsylvania,” Arehart says. A selection of townhomes on the southeast end of the neighborhood rounds out the area’s home stock, but sales on the properties are rare. Units have estimated values from about $80,000 to $115,000.

Mainstream music at the Pavilion at Star Lake

Many of Weirton’s local events are to the neighborhood’s west, near downtown Weirton. Each holiday season kicks off with the Christmas on Main Street event, a festival where guests can find live music, food, train rides, family-friendly games and ice skating at the Millsop Community Center. Each event culminates with the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony. To the south in Steubenville, a December tradition is the Nutcracker Village, where themed, life-sized nutcracker statues bring holiday cheer to the businesses of Downtown Steubenville.

Each summer, the Weirton Event Center hosts the annual Weirton Concert Series, where local acts from across the Ohio Valley take the stage for free performances. About 8 miles east of Weirton in Burgettstown, PA, the Pavilion at Star Lake is one of the Pittsburgh area’s major live music venues, bringing in well-known acts such as Bob Dylan, Pitbull, Dave Matthews Band and Cage the Elephant during its operating season from May to October.

Recreation and fitness in Weirton and Follansbee

Residents have access to selected recreation options in Weirton, while the surrounding Ohio Valley area offers additional places for outdoor leisure. Starvaggi Memorial Park and Pool is about 2 miles northeast of the neighborhood, and acts as a key hub for outdoor sports like tennis and hockey, as well as a place to cool off during the summer months. “There’s a few smaller playgrounds and such around the city, but that’s the main one that people go to,” Arehart says. For folks who don’t mind a longer drive, Follansbee Park offers additional spaces for picnics and baseball games 8 miles south of the neighborhood.

Slogans like “Stronger than Yesterday” and “Mamba Mentality” line the walls at the Weirton Fitness Complex, a locally owned gym with personal training programs and 24-hour access. West of the neighborhood near downtown Weirton, Williams Golf and Country Club has an 18-hole layout spread across 6,600 yards. Locals have prime views of the Ohio and West Virginia mountaintops as they hit their best drives across the fairways.
