A convenient, suburban bedroom community for Washington, D.C.
Convenience is key in Waldorf, an insulated suburb of about 81,000 people in Charles County. Located about 23 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., the enclave offers access to everyday essentials within a short drive. Many residents work in the Washington metro area. “I live in Waldorf, and if I didn’t have to leave Waldorf for work, I wouldn’t leave at all,” says Jeremiah Abu-Bakr, a Realtor with Own Real Estate in Landover. “It’s very quiet, the people are nice. Everything you need is right here.”
Colonials, split levels and new builds
Prospective buyers can find Colonial, ranch-style, split-level and new traditional builds, often shrouded by a covering of well-established trees. “There are a lot of two stories. Most of the new construction over the past 10 or 15 years would be Colonials,” Abu-Bakr says. “Definitely a lot of trees. It’s a country feel.” The median home listing price here is $436,000. Older three-bedroom homes can cost between $300,000 and $450,000, but most homes cost more. “I would say $450,000 to $600,000 is your average,” Abu-Bakr says. “On the higher end, you’re likely getting a Colonial. Anything lower probably is a townhome or a ranch-style house from $350,000 to $450,000.” Homes built after 2020 can range from $525,000 to $800,000, rising in price with additional space, larger lots and high-end appliances.
Shopping at St. Charles Towne Center
There’s ample shopping and dining in Waldorf. Safeway, Giant Food, Mom’s Organic Market and Food Lion are the town's grocery stores. Shopping centers like the two-story St. Charles Towne Center and Shops at Waldorf Center have big-box stores and chain restaurants. Napoli’s Pizzeria serves up Mediterranean fare and Italian classics. Walls Bakery has been making sweet treats like their famous eclairs since 1968.
Pinefield Community Park and Indian Head Bike Trail
Pinefield Community Park is a local favorite in Waldorf and offers a baseball diamond, playground and lots of green space. Trails abound in the area, including the Indian Head Bike Trail about 4 miles south. The former railroad track has been paved into a 13-mile hiking and biking trail. More trails can be found in Cedarville State Forest, a 3,500-acre park perfect for wildlife spotting, camping, horseback riding and fishing. Baseball fans can catch a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game at Regency Furniture Stadium about 6 miles away. When cold or rainy weather hits town, families head to AMF Waldorf Lanes for bowling or Scary Strokes for indoor mini golf.
Westlake High School has a theater troupe
Charles County Public Schools serves Waldorf students. Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School and Mattawoman Middle School both receive a C-plus from Niche. Westlake High School earns a B-minus. A lot of people gravitate toward that zip code for that school,” Abu-Bakr says. High schoolers can earn college credit through AP classes and dual enrollment. They can also participate in the Westlake High School Theatre Company, which is offered to all high school students. The company features student-led events in visual and performing arts such as workshops, community service projects, guest speakers and, of course, several productions each school year.
Free transportation in Charles County via VanGO
The Robert S. Crain Highway goes through town and is notorious for its traffic. Washington is less than 30 miles north via State Route 210, also called the Indian Head Highway. Charles County offers the free VanGO transportation service, which services Waldorf, La Plata, Indian Head, Charlotte Hall, Newburg and Nanjemoy areas. The service makes stops at popular destinations like the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center and the College of Southern Maryland. The UM Charles Regional Medical Center is the closest full-service emergency room and is about 9 miles away. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, about 26 miles north, has national and international flights.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
