Leisurely living in Wellesley Hills
Wellesley Hills, or better known locally as the "Country Club" neighborhood for its proximity to Wellesley Country Club, is a leafy suburban community 15 miles outside of Boston. In addition to stately residences, the community attracts homebuyers with highly rated public schools within walking distance, an MBTA commuter rail station and proximity to highways for convenient access to Boston. The neighborhood also has a family- and community-oriented vibe, making it easy to form close relationships with neighbors and other residents in town. “Wellesley Hills is very bucolic and pretty,” says Lynn Donahue, who is part of the Donahue Maley & Burns Team at Compass. “It’s an estate neighborhood with bigger homes on rolling hills; the streets are winding and not heavily traveled, so it’s very quiet.”

Grand and classic residences with larger lots
Most area residences were built in the first half of the 20th century, featuring grand center-front Colonial Revivals, Tudor Revivals, Cape Cods and Garrison-style properties. Newer builds from the past several decades are also peppered throughout the community. Since Wellesley did not have any new land for development, older houses had to be torn down in order to build new ones. Home prices typically go from $2 million to over $5.5 million, and lot sizes are usually between quarter acre to 1 acre. “The homes here are very classic and have larger lot sizes,” Donahue says. “Many finance, banking and biotech executives live here, and nothing stays on the market for long.”

A highly rated public school district
Students here go to Wellesley Public Schools, which is rated by Niche as the No. 2 best school district in Norfolk County with an A-plus Niche grade. Prospective primary schools include Joseph E. Fiske Elementary School and Otho L. Schofield Elementary School, both of which score an A. All students then go on to Wellesley Middle School and Wellesley High School, the only secondary public schools in town. Both Wellesley Middle and Wellesley High have an A-plus Niche rating, and the high school provides students with many dual-enrollment courses. Wellesley College, Babson College and Mass Bay Community College are all located in town.

Interconnected trails throughout the community
The community has abundant walking trails that connect the neighborhood, and people often take their pets to Centennial Park for walks along the pond or the wooded trails. The 2.5-mile Fuller Brook Path, or known locally as the Brook Path, is another popular walkway. In the winter, the neighborhood’s many hills and small ponds turn into ideal arenas for children to ice skate or sled. “In fact, children will go sledding down any hill they can find,” Donahue says. Featuring an 18-hole course, racquetball courts and an outdoor pool, Wellesley Country Club is the defining recreational venue in the community. Dating back to 1897, the historic institution is also a significant gathering and social place for residents in town, and memberships require sponsorship and have an extensive waitlist.

Retailers and eateries on Washington Street
Much of the area’s commerce takes place along Washington Street, which is dotted with independent bakeries, restaurants and shops. The old Wellesley Hills rail station has been repurposed into a popular coffee shop, Caffè Nero. The rail tracks are right behind the café, and many commuters regularly stop by as they wait for the daily trains to Boston. Also located along Washington Street, Whole Foods Marketplace is about 1 mile west. Farther west, Linden Square is another retail destination in town, featuring grocery stores such as Roche Bros., businesses and restaurants.

From festivals to local associations
One of the biggest events in town is Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend, featuring a pancake festival, fireworks, arts and crafts workshops and a parade. “Many people have summer homes elsewhere, so this is the big event that takes place before everyone leaves town for the summer,” Donahue says. In addition, neighborhoods have their own block parties, and local associations such as the Wellesley Mothers Forum and Wellesley Hills Junior Women's Club organize many charity and community events for people to socialize and get involved in the community.
Proximity to Boston
The community is home to the Wellesley Hill train station, which is a convenient stop for commuters who need to take the MBTA commuter rail to access Boston. The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority provides bus routes to towns in the Boston MetroWest area. Boston and Logan International Airport are both less than 20 miles away via Interstate 90, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital is right in town.
