Trendy living at Wellesley Square
Located 20 miles southwest of Boston, Wellesley Square is a charming neighborhood in the heart of Wellesley. Considered the shopping destination in town, the community is home to thriving boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants, as well as a number of fitness and health studios. “The walkability here really draws homebuyers," says Jane Neilson, a Realtor at Douglas Elliman Real Estate – Wellesley with 20 years of experience. "People can walk to the town center to shop, they can walk to the train station, and kids can also walk to get to their schools.” Smaller pocket neighborhoods, College Heights and Cottage Street, are also part of the community, and the area is adjacent to the Wellesley College campus.

A vibrant food scene and boutique shopping
Considered the town center, Wellesley Square is dotted with both independent and chain stores, restaurants and businesses. Many local establishments are along Central Street, including The Cheese Shop, Wellesley Books and Isabel Harvey, a jewelry store. “It’s owned by two delightful sisters who grew up in Wellesley,” Neilson says. “Cafe Mangal is also run by a local Turkish family here, and they have been in the food business for generations.” Also located along Central Street, Juniper is a trendy eatery serving dips and Mediterranean classics. Adjacent to Wellesley Square, Linden Square has Roche Bros., service shops, businesses and additional restaurants. “It’s where we get our errands done,” Neilson says. For big-box or department stores, residents can either head east to Newton or west to Natick Mall, which is the largest mall in New England with over 200 retailers.

Classic New England homes in the neighborhood
With towering trees and connected sidewalks, Wellesley Square homes are often tucked behind winding hills and roads. “The quintessential home in Wellesley is the center-entrance Colonial Revival,” Neilson says. “There is a mix of Victorian Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and some two-family, but in general it’s mostly single-family homes." Many properties are considered historic, built between the 1850s and the 1950s. Katharine Lee Bates, who wrote "America the Beautiful," lived in a house here built in 1810. Lots span from several thousand square feet to a quarter acre, which is considerably smaller than in neighborhoods such as Wellesley Farms. Real estate prices usually range from $1 million to $3 million. A handful of mid-1900s townhouses may be under $1 million, while newer units from the 2000s can reach $2 million. Terrazza Condominiums, a luxury condo building, has units that can fetch over $3 million, along with four-figure monthly HOA fees.

Top public and private schools in Wellesley
Wellesley Public Schools is rated by Niche as the No. 2 best school district in Norfolk County, and students here often go to either the A-plus John D. Hardy Elementary School or Isaac Sprague Elementary School, which has an A Niche grade. Students then go on to Wellesley Middle School and eventually Wellesley High School, both of which have an A-plus score. “The school district has been a perennial top performer in Greater Boston,” Neilson says. “What most people don’t know is the school system also has a really good special education program. It’s funded through the town, and the town is very committed to providing education to children of all needs.” Located several blocks south of the train station, the private, all-girls Dana Hall School serves students from fifth to 12th grade with an A-plus rating from Niche. Mass Bay Community College, Babson College and Wellesley College are also in Wellesley. “Lots of professors live here and walk to college,” Neilson says. “It’s also nice to see students go here for school and then settle here. Wellesley has a great performance arts center and an amazing greenhouse, and the campus is beautiful.”

Morton Park has green space and a walking path around a pond. Wellesley has many additional interconnected walking trails, and people often walk their dogs or jog along Crosstown Trail and Brook Path. Wellesley Square is a short commute to Boston
Notably, the Wellesley Square train station is right in the neighborhood, which serves as a stop for the MBTA commuter rail’s Framingham/Worcester Line. Many people walk to the train station for work, and residents can get to Boston’s South Station in six stops. Massachusetts Route 9 and Interstates 90 and 95 are all near the town, and people can take I-90 for access to the capital city and the Boston Logan International Airport, both of which are just under 20 miles away. The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority provides public bus transportation for towns in the MetroWest area. Newton-Wellesley Hospital is about 5 miles away.
Community events and fundraisers in town
Often considered the biggest event in town, Wellesley Wonderful Weekend celebrates the community with two days of activities before Memorial Weekend. The celebration has crafts workshops, history exhibits, nature walks, live concerts, food, fireworks and a parade. Local organizations such as the Wellesley Mothers Forum and Wellesley Hills Junior Women's Club also have charity and social events for community members. “The people here are very sociable, and we value support and giving back to the community,” Neilson says. An example is the Taste of Wellesley fundraiser, which is hosted by the Rotary Club of Wellesley to help with food insecurity. Local restaurants set up pop-up tents, and other entertainment includes live music, raffles and an art auction; all proceeds from the event go toward a local charitable cause.
