In the city of Wellington, quiet streets are lined by cast iron lampposts, wide sidewalks and a collection of classic, single-family homes. “It’s a small city with about 260 homes, so people typically know their neighbors and know what’s going on,” says Neal Cox, a Principal Broker of the Judah Real Estate Group who has been selling homes in the area for over seven years. “There’s not a lot of throughways, so you don’t get much traffic, but there are a lot of sidewalks and people are always out going on walks.” Located in the Upper Highlands, the city is within walking distance of Bardstown Road’s retail hub and is about 10 miles from Downtown Louisville.
Traditional homes with brick exteriors
With 259 homes built around the mid-1900s, Wellington attracts homebuyers with its charming homes and convenient location. “Prices are higher than in surrounding areas, usually in the $300,000s to $400,000s,” Cox says. “You’re paying for the location and will find a lot of Cape Cod and traditional homes.” Along curving streets with landscaped medians, homebuyers can get three-bedroom Cape Cods with dormer windows, detached garages and painted brick exteriors for about $330,000 to $415,000. Four-bedroom brick colonial revivals are also common, with prices starting at around $325,000.

Shopping and dining along Bardstown Road
Wellington is bordered to the west by Bardstown Road, a lively retail hub that is often referred to as Louisville’s original Restaurant Row. Residents are minutes from local favorites such as Bambi Bar, a casual bar and grill serving American classics, and Homemade Ice Cream Pie & Kitchen, a regional chain known for its homemade desserts. For running errands, the Bashford Manor Shops is less than 2 miles south of the city and includes shops such as Target, Walmart, Lowe’s and Kroger.
Artistic and academic programs in Jefferson County
The city is zoned for the Jefferson County Public School District, which earned a B from Niche and has an average student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. Younger kids in grades K-5 can walk to Hawthorne Elementary School, which earned a B-minus from Niche. “The elementary school sits in your backyard there and has a Spanish language immersion program, so it draws a lot of people to Wellington,” Cox says. Older kids attend Highland Middle School, which earned a grade of C and boasts an award-winning fine arts magnet program. Teens attend Atherton High School, which earned an A-minus from Niche and is the only high school offering the International Baccalaureate Program in Jefferson County. Wellington is also just minutes from Sullivan University, a private school with an emphasis on career-focused education.
Nearby parks with sports courts, trails and more
While there are no green spaces in Wellington, locals are about 2 miles south of the expansive Seneca and Cherokee Parks. Seneca Park boasts a variety of sports courts, including ballfields, basketball courts, tennis courts and multi-use fields. With a playground and an 18-hole golf course, it’s a popular destination for all ages. Next door, Cherokee Park is perhaps best known for its 2.4-mile walking trail, a scenic loop that weaves through rolling hills and woodlands.
I-264 and Bardstown Road are within easy reach of Wellington, KY.
Traveling to Downtown Louisville and beyond
Residents are less than a mile north of I-264, making it easier to traverse the 10 miles to Downtown Louisville and beyond. There are also several bus stops along Bardstown Road served by the Transit Authority of River City. For longer trips, locals are about 5 miles from the Louisville International Airport.
