Year-round farm town, Wellton, is popular for seasonal stays
Wellton is a farming town in eastern Yuma County, set along a major interstate and surrounded by stretches of the Sonoran Desert. The Gila Mountains rise to the west, providing an outdoorsy backdrop to a community where year-round agriculture and seasonal recreation set an easy-going pace. Agriculture is a cornerstone of the local and regional economy, with Yuma close enough to commute.
Home prices, housing types and utilities in Wellton
Local Caleb Tuggle, a Realtor with the Realty Agency, says Wellton is “quaint, cozy and easy to get around.” Homes here have a median price in the high $200,000s, with options including:
- Condos from the low to high $100,000s
- Manufactured homes from the low $100,000s to the mid-$200,000s
- Site-built, single-family homes from the mid-$100,000s to the high $300,000s
Most lots are under a quarter-acre. Internet availability is different at each address, with locals using a mix of 5G home internet, fixed wireless and satellite service, so anyone planning to work from home should check before closing. The Town of Wellton handles water and trash, while most homes use septic systems.
Wellton has K-8 in town, and the high school is a short drive away
The Wellton Elementary School District serves local students from preschool to eighth grade at a small campus in the heart of town. Older kids head about 10 miles down the way to Antelope Union High School in Noah. Arizona’s statewide open enrollment means families can also apply to any public school, tuition-free. If demand exceeds space, a lottery might be used. Transportation is also not a guarantee.
Farming jobs anchor the economy, while some residents commute
Wellton’s farming roots run deep, and Tuggle says many jobs here are in agriculture — Yuma County’s economic backbone. The town has a network of family-owned farms, feedyards and ag-support businesses, including McElhaney Feedyard and Naked Dates Farm. "There are still quite a few people who commute into town,” Tuggle says. Interstate 8 runs right through Wellton, making it easy for commuters to jump on and drive about 30 miles west to Yuma , a roughly 30- to 45-minute ride when roads are clear.
Basic shopping and healthcare are nearby, and more in Yuma
Locally, Wellton covers the basics: grocery and convenience stores, small shops, casual restaurants and primary care through clinics like Sunset Community Health Center. For specialized and after-hours care, or more extensive shopping trips, residents can head to Yuma, which has Onvida Health and various big-box stores.
Outdoor activities keep Wellton busy without feeling crowded
Tuggle says that Wellton is especially popular among seasonal residents and snowbirds. “There’s plenty of desert around where retirees like to go and spend afternoons on their side-by-sides.” Dove hunters roll through every September and November for the season, and golf is a steady year-round draw, though morning tee times go quick at Coyote Wash Golf Course or Butterfield Golf Course during hot valley summers. Residents can cool off at the N.D. and Katie Kline Pool, open from May to September. Rockhounding, casual desert hiking and community events round out the mix, giving residents plenty to do without the scene feeling overbuilt or crowded.
