A blend of calm and convenience
Houses from the middle of the 20th century line up along slightly curving roads, free from traffic and shaded by tall trees in Eckel Woods. Aurora West Allis Medical Center, the city's main hospital and a major employer, takes up about one-fifth of the neighborhood. "I expected the area to be noisy because of the hospital, but surprisingly, it wasn't at all," says Alice Bush, Realtor at Realty Executives Integrity, who has 40 years of experience in Milwaukee real estate. "There must be some rule for the emergency vehicles to turn off their sirens within a few blocks of the hospital." A short walk away from schools, restaurants, parks and one of the largest employers in West Allis, Eckel Woods is still "Very much suburban at its core," Bush says. "It's a sweet little pocket of West Allis."
Eckel Woods features a variety of classic brick ranch-style homes.

More spacious yards than nearby neighborhoods
When a home comes on the market in Eckel Woods – which is not often – it usually sells in under two weeks. Houses are not particularly big, and they sell at prices just slightly above the West Allis average, but they come with more spacious yards and a strong neighborhood atmosphere. "The yards are much deeper than most neighborhoods in West Allis," Bush says. "The sellers I worked with had a fence installed and let their dogs run around back there. They were also sad to leave the area, and many of their neighbors stopped by with gifts and to say goodbye before they moved." Fences separate most yards, but some owners keep the space between them uninterrupted for backyard get-togethers around patios and firepits. Built mostly in the 1950s and 19060s as the city developed westward, ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and cottages make up the neighborhood's designs. The single-family houses sell between $215,000 and $365,000. Some residents live in small apartment buildings along the area's perimeter, and duplexes are not common but sell in the same range as single-family homes. Most driveways lead to detached garages, where residents can park to keep the tree-lined streets free from cars.

Swimming in the summer and indoor fitness in the winter
McCarty Park is the second largest park in West Allis and a short walk from many homes in Eckel Woods. Originally called Eckel Track, the park was donated in 1944 to West Allis by the same farmer from which Eckel Woods got its name. Walking trails curve around sports courts and fields, play equipment and a fishing pond. However, the standout feature of McCarty Park is the public pool with a two-story-tall waterslide, lap lanes and a designated area for young kids. On cold and snowy days, many drive five minutes west to the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Center for its indoor gymnasium and elevated walking track. The center also offers youth and adult programs for fitness, education and performing arts. There are also adaptive programs like camps and day programs for persons with disabilities across all ages.

Preparing for life after school with “Career Clusters”
Though the neighborhood is small, only a quarter of a square mile, it is divided into three different zones for elementary education. Most students attend Franklin Elementary School, rated a C-plus by Niche. Others attend Irving Elementary School and Mitchell Elementary School, rated a C-plus and B-minus, respectively. All students come together for middle school at C-rated Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate, followed by West Allis Central High School. Rated a C-plus, the high school is just north of the neighborhood and within walking and biking distance of every home. Career Pathway and work-based learning programs are available with 16 concentrations called 'Career Clusters." Award-winning Peruvian food
The city of West Allis has exploded in the past 15 years with locally owned restaurants and shops. While most are towards the city's northeast downtown area, a few standouts are close to Eckel Woods, adding to its desirability. "There's a wave of new residents moving into West Allis that are new shoppers, new drinkers and new eaters," says West Allis Mayor Dan Devine. "They want to have a good number of options a short drive away, and it helps that parking is free here." Close to the neighborhood, on West National Avenue, is Chef Paz Restaurant. When she was 12, Chef Maritza Paz began cooking with her mother and learned Peruvian cooking, which takes influence from African, Japanese, Spanish and Incan cuisines. Ceviche and paella are two dishes served at the award-winning restaurant. Rupena's Fine Foods has an in-house butcher, sandwich shop, fresh produce and pantry items. Major grocery stores are west of Interstate 41, among large department stores and casual chain eateries.

Driving to downtown Milwaukee in under 15 minutes
Those working at the hospital can walk there, but commuters working 9 miles away in downtown Milwaukee can hop on a nearby on-ramp to Interstate 41. According to Bush, "Unless you run into traffic, you can get just about anywhere in 15 to 20 minutes. It will probably take you more time to find parking in downtown Milwaukee than it will to drive there." Buses stop along West Lincoln Avenue and South 92nd Street. There are no bike lanes in the neighborhood, but the planning and zoning department of West Allis, in conjunction with the city's engineers, is working to add bike lanes and increase mobility for its residents. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 12 miles away.
