Greenfield Park
Golf, fishing and swimming are available at Greenfield Park
The neighborhood's namesake park is its central space for community gatherings. Pickup games of volleyball and baseball take place on the fields while anglers fish in the 6-acre pond stocked with panfish and largemouth bass. The Milwaukee Great Lakes Sports Fishermen organization holds free ice-fishing clinics there in winter. Greenfield Park has walking trails through a forest, an 18-hole golf course and Cool Waters Aquatic Park. "The water park is a big attraction in the summer for West Allis families and even residents of New Berlin," Klose says. West Allis Cross Town Connector is a trail that runs alongside the area's active train track. It converges with the New Berlin Trail to the west, continuing over 8 miles west to Waukesha. "The railroad trail is beautiful," Klose says. "Bikers love it, marathon trainers love it and people with dogs love it."Condos, mobile homes and single-family homes are available
Pockets of mobile homes, single-family homes and condos are near the area's large industrial sectors. "That part of West Allis has been industrial forever," Klose says. "All the industry in that area is why the mobile home parks set up where they did – affordable housing near the businesses and employers." Lincoln Park Manufactured Home Community and Greenfield Terrace Mobile Home Court charge monthly lot fees, and mobile homes sell between $40,000 and $90,000. Next to the area's apartment buildings are condo buildings with units that range from $100,000 to $170,000. Small, single-family homes have Cape Cod and bungalow designs and sell between $225,000 and $300,000.Interstate 41 and West Greenfield Avenue are the main roads
Interstate 41 goes north and south beside the neighborhood's easternmost homes, connecting to interstates 43 and 94. Although the City of West Allis has sound barriers in residential areas near highways, Greenfield Park still experiences traffic-related noise. West Greenfield Avenue is a main intercity road that goes east towards West Allis' City Center and continues to downtown Milwaukee, 9 miles away. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 13 miles southeast, and Aurora West Allis Medical Center is less than 2 miles away. Milwaukee County Transit System buses stop on West Greenfield Avenue, South 108th Street and West Lincoln Avenue.Fast-food chains and department stores are on South 108th Street
Most of the city's retail plazas, restaurants and grocery stores are along South 108th Street, also called Highway 100. Aldi, McDonald's, Starbucks and Dairy Queen are a few recognizable names in the area. More spots farther south include Target, Menards, The Home Depot and fast-food chains. Locally owned restaurants in the neighborhood have a range of cuisines from Chinese to Vietnamese, Mexican to Greek.Elementary school attendance is determined by address
Students living north of the train tracks can begin learning at Walker Elementary School, rated B by Niche. Hoover Elementary School teaches children living south of the railway and is rated C-plus. Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate School is rated C, and Nathan Hale High School is rated B-minus. The high school is just south of Lincoln Avenue, and the West Allis Athletic Complex is behind the school. The complex has four baseball and softball diamonds, soccer and football fields, a rubberized track and spaces for field events like javelin and shot put.Annual events at the park raise money for charity
From the end of May to the beginning of June, Greenfield Park transforms into a beer garden with food trucks and bands. The park is one of six locations visited by The Traveling Beer Garden, which offers half-price beers on Tuesdays and discount prices for bringing a glass from home rather than using plastic cups. Proceeds from the events go towards improving the parks that host them. The park also hosts a summer concert series and the Cream City 5k, an event started in 2016 to raise money for organ, eye and tissue donations.
