A supportive, small-town vibe
The homes in Henderson Park may be older, but the neighborhood is seeing a lot of new growth. Shops and restaurants fill empty buildings, streets and sidewalks get facelifts and a new spirit has come to the area. "We chose to move and set up our business here from 200 miles away," says Jamie Phoenix, owner of Ultratwist Vintage in Henderson Park. "We liked the proximity to Milwaukee, but also that West Allis has a supportive, small-town vibe of its own." While West Allis is a growing Milwaukee suburb rebounding from industrial fallout a few decades ago, Henderson Park exemplifies that change with its new hotel, apartment complex and shopping plazas replacing the open spaces left behind when factories closed.
Century-old homes and many duplexes
The makeup of each street in Henderson Park varies from one to the next, with usage and diversity increasing as the city grows. "The neighborhood has an interesting mix of residential and commercial buildings," Phoenix says. "There are houses and apartments right next to stores, restaurants and schools." The neighborhood also has a large assisted living facility on National Avenue. The neighborhood's interior streets are primarily residential, with bungalows, ranch-style homes, Victorians and American Foursquares. Some Victorians date back to the 1890s and are adorned with Witch's hat turrets, bay windows and wrap-around porches. Detached garages are at the back of narrow driveways, and front yards are on small hills. Most homes are only a few feet from the streets — sidewalks and front doors are usually separated by only a handful of cement steps, flower beds and short porches. Single-family homes are slightly more expensive than duplexes, ranging between $220,000 and $380,000, as opposed to $200,000 and $340,000. Nearly half of the homes sold in recent years are duplexes or multi-family homes, and the area's houses sell in under two weeks on the market.

A push for locally-owned businesses
When West Allis' major factories, like the manufacturer Allis-Chalmers, shut down in the late 1900s, the city saw a significant decrease in businesses, shopping and dining. But in the past 15 years, the city has bounced back, and many locally-owned restaurants and stores have set up shop towards the city's eastern side. Ultratwist Vintage opened in June 2023 along National Avenue. The funky store sells authentic vintage, modern resale and retro-style new clothing. "What I am most proud of is creating a very inclusive space," Phoenix says. "We offer inclusive styles, sizes and prices so no matter where someone is at in their life, they can find something they love and can take home." Paulie's Pub & Eatery is right across from the fairgrounds and has activities going on year-round. The American pub has outdoor seating, TVs for every sports game and weekly live music. A few small shopping strips with restaurants, a pharmacy and salons are along South 84th Street. Large shopping plazas with grocery stores, department stores, home improvement stores and chain restaurants are about 3 miles west and east.

Landing tricks and exploring history at nearby parks
Helmets are encouraged at Joyce Radtke Park. The skate park at the neighborhood's southwestern corner has skate bowls, obstacles and ramps for practicing new tricks. When the sun sets early in fall, skaters and bikers don't need to head home now that the park is lighted at night. For a pick-up soccer or baseball game, residents can head to Honey Creek Park in the Honey Creek Settlement neighborhood. The park is also home to some historic sights, like the city's old log cabin schoolhouse and tombstones in the cemetery that date back to the mid-1800s. Perhaps the most prominent entertainment attraction in West Allis is Wisconsin State Fair Park. The state fair attracts over 1,000,000 visitors annually over two weeks and is within walking distance of every home in Henderson Park. Only West Greenfield Avenue separates the neighborhood from the fairgrounds and Milwaukee Mile, the oldest operational motor raceway in the world.

National Avenue provides connectivity
Henderson Park is in a very accessible location, bordered to the north by West Greenfield Avenue and intersected by National Avenue. Both streets head east to West Allis' growing downtown center, and "National Avenue stretches all the way from downtown Milwaukee proper to rural farmlands," Phoenix says. "And we're smack dab in the middle of it all." Downtown Milwaukee is 7 miles away, with the fastest route being via Interstate 94. Onramps to the interstate are only a mile north, and those who take public transportation can hop on one of the many buses traveling along the neighborhood's borders. The Wisconsin State Fair has large parking lots, but they fill up quickly. Due to the neighborhood's proximity, parking and traffic on Henderson Park's residential streets can be an issue for those two weeks of the year.
Downtown Milwaukee is a short 15 minute drive from Henderson Park via I-94.
Hedenrson Park's bus stops provide residents with easy public transit options.
